2000 S4 cat. conv. replacement

Hey all, new to board, but couldn't find the info I was looking for. I just bought a used (75K miles) 2000 audi S4 and it looks like the catalytic converter needs to be replaced (MIL came on, Audi dealer diagnosed). The cat. will be covered under an 8yr/80K warantee, but they're telling me I need to replace the O2 sensors in front and behind the cat. or else it won't function properly. They're quoting me prices of ~$250/sensor + 5 hours labor (~$500). I'd rather not sink an additional $1000 into my "new" car unless absolutely necessary. Anyone have experience with this, and thoughts or advice to share? I don't know a ton about cars, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know for sure, but I can't think of any reason that the O2 sensors would need to be replaced with the cat if they are still good. If they are bad, then yeah, they will obviously have to be replaced. I'll do some more checking if you can wait a bit and get back for sure.
Best,
Brad

BTW, why aren't the O2 sensors under warranty too?? What did they tell you on that one?

Audi dealership (I know, I know), says that O2 sensors wear with the cat., so they won't replace cat w/o doing the O2 as well. To do so would be to put used sensors around new cat, and would give inaccurate readings and responses, so audi will not do this. They didn't mention if they could test O2 sensors to see if they're still good, but I'll follow up on that. They didn't mention why O2 not covered, other than that it's not in the warrantee. My guess is because they are considered a "wearable part" and are thus not subject to the same guarantees as the cat. Newest update is 2 O2 sensors ($500) plus 2hrs labor ($200) since a lot of the work to replace O2s must be done to get cat. conv. out anyway. Getting better, but sounds like there's still some room for negotiation... Thanks for your help, I'll keep you posted.
