hello everyone I turn to you again for ideas or hopfully answer to my troubles. I have a 94 with a 3.4 engine and mostly everything is fine but this one problem is pissing me off. I can only notice it at night time when its dark out and i have the headlights ( and fog lights) on. What happens is the lights on the dash and the head lights dim greatly like if the battery was all of a sudden disconected or if all of the sudden the alenator just died......... Now obvious solutions would be check the battery/ wires/ and altenator.... Its got a brand new battery and i checked connections although i haven't checked the altenator thats a bit of trouble on my engine. The lights dim so bad that the lights dim like the car is going to shut off and then the ABS light comes on and the code is ( low voltage drop) ??? also it jucies the system if i am at idle and i have the turn signal on... The hole problem is is when i'm driving the lights will go dim bright dim bright and so on. sometimes when this happenes i am behind people and they think i am flashing my high beams to them. anyway i know this was a long post i'm sorry but does anyone have any ideas? I can give u more detail but to save the length of this post thats it for now.... Thank you

Re: lights dim power loss....anyone have ideas?
Well I have a Z-34 and is the same engine as your car. I know what a pain is to get the alternator out. But, looks like the problem is on the voltage regulator. If the diodes were wrong the car would not be charging at all and by what you describe there looks like your car is charging at least when is in motion. The voltage regulator is the one that makes sure that the output voltage from the alternator is not above 15 dc volts or lower than ~12Volts. If the regulator is failing cold cause a voltage oscilation like the one you are describing here. Also another work around is to install a really big battery, what I mean is a battery with at least 900+ CCA.
In my car I changed the diodes to be generating 115 amps instead of the 105 OEM AMPS and installed a battery(OPtima) that has 900+CCA. Since I did that the flashing never happened again. Hope this helps. |

Re: lights dim power loss....anyone have ideas?
Ok today at tech i was looking around at the TSB's on my 94 and I came across an article that described my problems.... It turns out its most likely the altenator because it says after years of high heat stress the altenator creates less and less power especialy at idle and it described my problems. so looks like i am going to be changing the altenator good thing i have a lift to use. I'll let you know if that was the problem for sure.
Thanks for the input though Were did you get the diodes to generate 115 because the altenator i bought is only oem? |
