Angry Piece of junk explorer!

I am getting really frusterated with my Explorer. I posted in another thread about buying it recently and the problems I was having. It seems I have encountered problem after problem. I am almost tempted to just sell the thing and get something else altogether. I havent had time to really look into getting the 4 wheel drive fixed yet, but its not a real high concern to me as I really havent a need for it. But I have had the ABS light come on last week after just making a simple right turn. Brakes worked fine and have since. Unhooked battery and it went off and hasnt came back on. But now, sometimes when I brake, I hear and feel a boing kinda spring noise from under the brake pedal. But the brakes still work fine? I also got DH to add freon to the air conditioner this past weekend as the man I bought it from said that is all it needs, and air still isnt getting cold though it says it is charged. I cant really tell if the compressor is kicking on or not though. The air blows fine just not cold at all. And the kicker of it all is that we have been getting some pretty warm weather lately, in the 80's, and Im pregnant so Im REALLY getting aggravated with this vehicle. It seems like one thing after another. I have also heard a popping noise every now and then, mostly when I first take off. Even the seatbelt doesnt work!! Any advice please??? Should I just sell this thing and try to find another ? I dont have the money to sink into a money pit with a baby on the way. We have enough to buy as it is for it.

Re: Piece of junk explorer!

From all the problems you listed on this and your other posts. I say sell the darn thing and get another one. Not worth sinking in the money to the money pit. First do the math. If it were only a few things I say spend the money but you've listed the many things that are expensive, such as 4X4, air conditioner, right tire shake (suspension).

If you want to spend the money here's some of the fixes:

A/C- probably a hose seal, which means finding someone to fix and this cost since it's probably R-12 Freon

4X4-could be just the acutator motor (see other posts) but if not who knows

ABS light- probably low on the brake fluid - I had this problem. Could also be the RABS valve - common problem for 91-93

Seatbelt- my guess the driver's inboard latch doesn't keep the belt buckled - get used from wrecking yard -I had this problem

Popping noise- the spring seats(bottom of the coils) Spray a generous amount of WD-40 at the seats.

Re: Piece of junk explorer!

I agree, sell it.
If the A/C unit is really charged and the air you feel isn't cold, I suspect the blend door. It's a door up in the dash area that closes off the warm air from the heater. If that malfunctions, you get warm air.
This isn't a cheap fix on most cars, alot of labor to get to it.Have a joyous birth!

I meant to add that the air conditioner has supposedly been converted already to , is it R 134? Whatever the newer freon is..sorry just not that up to date on the freon. But Im wondering if when it was converted if it was done properly, as in draining all of the old out. Just not sure because the guy didnt tell me. And I have really found out just how dishonest he was by telling me that all it needed was a little freon and tires balanced. I really cant stand when someone lies. Especially since I told him I was pregnant and couldnt afford to put alot of work into a vehicle. As for the popping, it doesnt really sound like it is under the seat.Sounds like it is from under the front of the truck somewhere. This morning on the way to work it did it while driving. I was going about 45 mph when all of a sudden I heard the pop noise from under the hood. All of the gages were fine and nothing else became of it but I am just concerned about what it is and if it is something that may just go out on me while driving it. As it is I have a drs appt every week and I live about 25 miles from it out in the middle of nowhere land so I dont want to get stranded somewhere. I really do appreciate you all replying. I talked it over with DH yesterday and decided that we are going to sell it as soon as it is paid off. I only paid $3000.00 for it so at least it wont take long to pay off. But til then I am stuck with it so I have got to at least do the minor things to keep it at least running.

Wink Re: Piece of junk explorer!

Spray the spring seats and see if that helps with the popping noise. The seats are plastic and a bit of WD40 does help. Also spray silicone on the lower control arm bushings and they are just about below the front seats. FYI and hubbie, control arm bushings have a metal shield/washer covering it a bit. Spray both sides of each bushing. These bushings are a problem. Spraying will be help. BTW, if it's a boy you can name him after us in the forum and if it's a girl name her Princess.

Thanks for the advice. Ill get DH to try that. Heck dont guess it will hurt. LOL on the name...I can see that now. Think DH would probably freak itf I told him we had to name our child something like XLT or Ford.. And Princess?...LOL Now just because Im from Alabama doesnt mean Im a redneck.... . Thanks again to you all for the advice. I did take it to a mechanic yesterday and he drove it and said the tires felt like they had not even balanced them at WalMart so for me to take it back to them and make them redo it. Also said it needs an alignment but I can handle that. SO I will be taking it back today and telling them to redo it or give me my money back.
