I have a 1996 Taurus LX, with the engine light on.
I checked the code & it was P0401 (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected). So I took the EGR Valve off and found it clogged with carbon. I replaced the EGR Valve. But surely something has caused this to happen, could it be the converter? Any ideas Car runs ok. |

Re: Engine Light
The EGR valve recirculates exhaust gases into the intake. Your convertor cleans those gases after burning the fuel air mixture. Don't think your convertor has much to do with a carbon build up. Look more at your plugs and wires. Bad ignition components will give you uncomplete combustion.

P0401
I have a 2001 Ford Taurus and my engine light came on with a trouble code of P0401. This means either your EGR is clogged or your DPFE (Differential Pressure Feedback EGR) is defective. In my case the DPFE was defective. There is a procedure for checking the EGR and DPFE, but I do not know what it is. I took a chance and spent $65 at the dealership and replaced the DPFE. It has been 5 months and my engine light is still off. I do not suggest that you take a chance like I did.
