dynomax exahaust performace

i just won a bid on ebay for a cat-back dynomax superturbo exahust system....now how much power gain should i get out of it...i was thinking about 10hp? is that too much or too little? and also does anyone else have dynomax superturbo installed on their car...if so how does it sound? i have a stock (besides this exhaust) 2000 gt w/41k on it. thanks, Rob

Re: dynomax exahaust performace

Hi caruch,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I've heard awful reviews for that system. It apparently uses the same exact pipe diameters as stock, and the exhaust note does not change much from stock either. You would be better off having gone with a different system. I advise you to either cancel the buy, or resell it and get a different one. The Borla SS or Gmpp SS systems are both good. Corsa also makes a somewhat expensive SS system as well.

i dont think it uses the same diameter b/c they showed a diagram of the pipes and the dynomax was bigger than stock...i can't spend 800bucks on one of these things i just needed a cheap but good exhaust. i'm only 17, i went to some exhaust review sites and the dynomax got decent reviews...i'll post back once i get them installed...i still need to know how much POWER i'm gonna get out of these thanks, Rob

Re: dynomax exahaust performace

Mufflers arent going to add that much HP. I doubt you'll be able to tell a difference.

Good choice on not wasting the cash on one of those $$$ systems. I wish someone would have told me to save my money when I first started. I have Hooker AeroChamber mufflers and they sound pretty good. They do have pretty bad cabin drone at 2k rpm

Re: Re: dynomax exahaust performace

If your able to open a pdf file, you can view the diagram here...towards the bottom of the document

http://www.dynomax.com/documents/pas...ral_motors.pdf

The dynomax system is 2 1\4 inch piping from the cat back, into 2, 2 1\4 inch pipes. The first 2 1\4 inch pipe is the same size as stock. After the Y pipe, the size does get larger, from dual 2 inchers stock, to dual 2 1\4 inch pipes, which is silly.

To build power in the exhaust system (which there isn't much to be had on these cars until your heavily modified anyway), you need a larger diameter single pipe from the cat back to ditch the hottest gases out of the engine quickly.(This assumes you have a larger downpipe and u-bend removed anyway, if you want to make ANY more power) As the gases travel the exhaust system, they cool down and contract which requires LESS pipe after the Y.

So this poorly designed system does not increase the primary pipe, the actual restriction, it simply adds more flow to the end of the exhaust that needs it less (since the gases are more cooled at that point and require less pipe).

The name of the game in exhaust is velocity, and this system does not create it. Borla's system uses a 2 1\2 inch mandrel bent pipe, into dual 2 1\4 inch pipes, which then go through 2 inch pipe at the end of the system.(muffler to tips pipe) This is known as a tuned system. The 2 inch pipe helps to increase the exhaust velocity at the end (since less pipe is needed at that point), which more efficiently ditches the spent gas.

I just wanted you to know what you were buying, and that I have heard bad reviews on it. The GMPP system isn't that much more than the Dynomax setup iirc. Maybe 150 or so? You could also pick up a used system in the clubgp classifieds. The cheapest option would be to go to an exhaust shop, have the u-bend removed, have 2 1\2 inch pipe installed in place of the factory primary pipe, and add the mufflers of your choice (I suggest Magnaflows). It would cost less than the dynomax system (labor and parts) and it would make some power (probably 5-10 at the most).

Re: dynomax exahaust performace

Caruch where did you found the awesome grills. I have the clipon ones but they are a pain to install and mine did not had the lower ones. Are you bolt ons? And BTW mufflers would not do a lot for you if you leave the stock manifolds or the U-bend. You would get more taking of the u-bend and installing ported exahust manifols or headers.

They look just like the VT grills or the SS grills

Re: dynomax exahaust performace

Those look nice, but remind me of something you'd see on a Buick or Caddy
