Trying to help a friend

Hey guys, I'm not a big DSM guy, but I figured you guys could help. My friend is looking at a 97 GST and something seems a little fishy. The guy thats selling it says that Instead of boosting at the stock 12 PSI he has it turned up to 25psi on stock internals. The only exhause work that has been done is a bigass chrome muffler. He says it has a stand alone fuel managment system, but my friend saw no sign of one. I don't know, but the 12 psi stock seemes a little high to me, and the 25psi on stock internals just doesn't seem right either. I could be wrong though. Anything you guys have to add is much appreciated. Thanks.

15psi is stock boost for a 2g.
The seller is obviously an idiot. If you drive (or ride in) the car, and it has a boost gauge, see for yourself. If you look under the hood, look for a boost controller. I doubt the car has anything under the hood at all.

Oh yeah, and I have a hard time believing that a T25 could spike to 25psi, and it definately can't hold 25psi for long.

What other mods are done?

25psi on the stock T25 turbo is insane, if not impossible.

"Standalone Fuel Management" is something rice boys use after they put a "resistor mod" on their IAT sensor, or just to cover up the fact they don't know their asses from a hole in the ground.

Be VERY wary about the car, and have a dealership look it over.

I run 20-24 psi on stock internals, but with a much larger turbo and 1g internals as opposed to the 2g internals.

well, stock psi on a 26 is probably closer to 14-15psi to start with. the stock turbo can't really handle 25psi, at least not past 4500 rpm! so he should ask him what kind of turbo he replaced the stock one with. 25psi on many of the bigger turbo's [although it is better to measure the capacity by volume, as in a t-25 [stock turbo] @15psi is less volume than a 20g@15psi] is fine for the stock internals, they are good to about 440hp or so. the big ass chrome muffler may be chrome for looks, but if it is a full 3" catback system it is also very useful. i would ask more questions about what kind of 'stand alone fuel management' is being used in the system, that is kinda open ended. overall, ask for a more specific list of mods the guy has on the car and bring it back for a better appraisal of the situation and we may be able to give it more of a BS test

The guy never said anything about changing turbos. He only said he "Cranked up the boost." and the exhaust is stock except for the muffler.

It's hard to say: "You're full of shit, I talked to people on this website and they say you are lying."

However, you could say "I talked to some friends and it's hard to believe you are running 25psi."

To run higher than stock boost you need A. a boost controller, and B. a boost gauge.

You can check either of those for the truth.
