silverado brake failure

99' Silverado, 4.3, 4x4, when I approach a stop sign etc. occasionally the brake pedal will kinda stutter but the truck keeps rolling, like it has no brakes, very scary. Otherwise the breaks work fine.

Any advice would be appreciated/

Thanks,
MNG

Re: silverado brake failure

sounds like a bad abs module. i'd get a dealer to diagnose it first since these things are very expensive

Re: silverado brake failure

The problem is addressed in Service Bulletin 02-05-25-006A and an easy fix if you can take your front wheel, caliper and rotor off. The ABS sensor attracts metal flakes and the hub it fits into gets a rust buildup. I tested both secsors and found the left one to be low in output voltage. It was cleaned and now all is well. Any GM dealer will have access to the bulletin. I would pull up to a stop light or another car etc...the ABS unit would buzz and my brakes would release. Pretty scary.

Thanks for the info Sonny01.

I pulled into my driveway yesterday and almost went right through the garage door. The driveway was bare and dry but when I went to stop the ABS kicked in and the truck surged forward. I stopped within inches of the door.
Good to know it's a simple fix. How exactly do you clean it? Do you just have to brush the flakes/rust off?

Paul.

Re: silverado brake failure

After you get the sensor off just about any cleaner will do but the casing is some kind of black plastic so be careful you don't melt it. The whole problem is you can't get to the sensor very easy to use a tool until it comes off. If you have an AC volt meter you can test the sensors first. You would need to splice into the wires, raise the truck and spin the tire. My left one was .125 and the right .360. .350 is the minimum.
