Widening Rims?

Hello, I'm interested in widening some 13" rims that I have. Does anyone know where I can get the wider "rings" of the rim? Maybe between 6"-7". Currently the rims are 13"x4.5" but does anyone know an estimate of how much it would cost to widen these rims?

Re: Widening Rims?

I am not aware of any way to widen a wheel like that unless it is a modular wheel. If it is you would have to check with the maker to see if they make wider rim secitons.

Well, the rim is an old OEM Toyota rim. Here's a photo of a modified version of the rim that has been widened.

According to my father, he says you can remove the middle (which I assume is what you mean by modular wheel) and you just need to re-mount them on wider rims, but first I have to find those wider rims.

Tomorrow, I'll get pictures of the same rims that I want to modify. So how much do you think it would cost?

Thanks.

Re: Widening Rims?

Those wheel in the picture were probably cut and welded at the Toyota factory that produced them. They cut the lip off and weld an extension on it. Don't dare trying it unless you are the bee's knee's at welding. Your life rides on your wheels ya'know. You probably have a better chance of having those on your car if you found some on eBay of Japan. It's probably just as unlikely but it couldn't hurt to look.

Boss San is correct! Do not attempt this at home! That is not a modular that can be taken apart and rebuilt with a wider rim section. You have a one piece rim and welded center. The other photo is of a factory racing wheel.

Don't worry, I never did plan to do this on my own.. I don't even have a welding machine. Considered going to the machine shop but don't know how much it would cost, and how good of a job would be done.

Well, I guess I'm better off looking for different rims for wider ones or just keeping the existing rims, because I like the "old school Toyota" look.

Hope they don't charge an arm and a leg. If you know someone who races stocks or 1/4 mile cars check with the too. When I was in Florida we did some 14" wide...... ya thats right wide...wheels for a swamper we built. Problem was we had to use inner tubes incase of small pin holes in the welds. But if you have someone do the job and they do MIG welding there should be NO problem.
