1983 Yamaha Maxim 750 Help

I have a question...I have a 1983 Yamaha Maxim 750.The problem i have is i think the cdi unit.I turn the key and all the lights come on but when i hit the start button nothing happens...If i put a jumper wire from my battery positive side and run it to the red\white wire on the cdi everything works like the electric start.Does this sound like the cdi or do i have a problem somewhere else? Please help...Thanks

Re: 1983 Yamaha Maxim 750 Help

If I understand you right, your starter solenoid is not engaging: Does that bike have a neutral light, clutch (engaged) switch, and/or a sidestand extended switch. Those are the only things I can think of that would interupt the starter solenoid with the exception of the emergency cuttoff switch (I'm sure you checked that). The CDI is just the spark signal (it doesn't have anything to do with the starter or starter solenoid), although you may be feeding the start button power when you jumper it the way you described. If you do have any of those switches listed above, one of them might be bad (stuck open). Try jumpering each of them and see if you can get the solenoid to click.

Question Re: Re: 1983 Yamaha Maxim 750 Help

I think I might have a cdi problem too. I own a 1985 Yamaha XJ700N(Maxim) and everything seems to work fine when I turn the key on. The bike starts and runs good. But when i try using the flashers, they will not blink, when i try using the break light, it will not get brighter, the horn will not sound, if i'm holding the clutch and in first gear, the side kicj in down position should stall the bike but it does not, and last but not least, the rpm wobbles around 700rpm not matter how fast i go... I am skeptical bringing it to a bike shop and getting robbed... Do you think i could go ahead and order a cdi unit if you thing it is the problem and install it myself?

I suspecy you may have a bad electrical ground to the chassis. My '83 Maxim 750 does the same thing.
I am not sure what you mean by 'wobble, but it sounds like it might be a lean surge in the carbs....they many need cleaning/rebuilding and/or synchronising.

Not your CDI unit in any case above. The CDI is the spark control for the engine.

Check the ground wire on the back of the transmission that goes to the frame and battery.

Sounds more like a cable or harness problem to me...
