engine problems

this is really bothering me, whenever i'm idling, its usually about 900 rpms, but then sometimes it just goes up to 1400 rpms with no gas added. Then when i want to go, i step on the gas but it feels like there's nothing there, the pedal just feels really soft. Kinda feel like te gas "chugs". then another time, i tried to go, the car jerked like crazy (yes, i know how to drive stick) it scares me everytime cuz i dunno when the car is just gonna die on me

All 240 owners should eventually do a few things that are free and will prevent alot of problems and fix alot of current ones.

-Clean the throttle plate with degreaser
-Remove AAV valve, clean with degreaser
-Remove EGR/AIV assembly, make sure its working, clean
-Remove MAF and clean with q-tip and rubbing alcohol (be careful around the wires)
-Reground the negative battery terminal and major engine grounds (use better gauge wire and sand the paint off the chassis where your contacts are)

A good fuel pump and fuel filter are also key...alot of 240s go bad in that area with alot of mileage.

With these things in proper running order, your KA should last you a lonnng time. Decarbonizing with SEAFOAM works fuckin miracles...go here for detailed instructions on SEAFOAM application.

Good luck budday. 240s are what the worlds all aboot. Now I find that racist.

Re: engine problems

Yea great info. I didnt know that KA's had EGR's (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)? I know the one on my VG30DE is tough as shit to get at, where are they located on KA's?

The KA24E does have EGR. It's actually integrated with the AIV valve, which makes it this huge clusterfuck of plastic, valves, and metal on the drivers side engine compartment. The top of it is the big black box that's behind (as in closer to the firewall) than the intake box. Under it is the AIV valve and EGR...

The purpose of the AIV is to let exhaust gas into the intake when it's cold to heat up the catalytic converter faster. It's completley useless and when it fails, it sticks open and dumps exhaust into your intake and kills your motor.

PureSXyness- Glad it was some help. You think your car runs good now, try all of those. Out of curiosity, which one of those things were your problem? Another good tip is when you replace your fuel filter, replace it with one for a 91+ 300zx Twin Turbo. Alot more flow, and it fits really easy. All you have to do it widen the mounting clip some, it only takes some hand force. Also, if you have a KA24DE, there are some other cool tricks to getting some power out of it like replacing your intake cam with an exhaust cam from a S13 KA24DE.

Re: engine problems

J Spec,

i did the SEAFOAM stuff, it DOES work miracles. I just did the one where you put it into the vacuum hose, the car was acting very CRAZY, i had to have a friend of mine trying to keep the car stable while i poured the stuff in. My gas is 3/4 gone so i think i'll put some into the gas tank. Thanks again

BTW, i do have a KA24DE, what are some of these cool tricks you speak of?

Well I see that you have a 96, so both of your cams have 232 duration. The exhaust cams of a 91-93 KA (not sure about the 94 but i think its the same) are 248 duration and they can replace your stock cams with no modification. You just have to know how to replace cams and reset the timing. Just make sure that your engine has good compression and can take the extra power that the cams will give you. You can really feel it in the mid range and top end.

You can also remove your seconday butterfly from your intake, it'll cause your idle to be rougher but there's some power to be had there.

It might not be on their website, but they have it at most stores. If you read the whole thread from NICO, you'll see alot of people having trouble finding it as well. I think there's places you can find it online, but I'd go to a Napa Autoparts personally and check.

Re: engine problems

or you could call them, that's what i did

there were 2 napa's in my area, i called one but they said they didn't have it, the guy was probably some homo that didn't know they even had it, but then i called the second and they said they had some, so it'll go either way

good luck, if you get your hands on some, it'll do your car wonders!

Re: engine problems

vacuum line, look towards the right of the engine bay. There should be a huge black disc thing that's going vertical as you look at it. then right in front of it there should be some tubes. one of them should come out and then go back in. If you're confused just look for the hose that goes to the intake manifold. Or, if you're risky just unhook the hose, turn on the car, and it should be sucking in air, you should be able to hear it
