engine running problem

i havee a 1997 grand cherokee with the i6 and just over 83k miles just the other day i get into my truck and about to come home from school and i drive for about 5 min and then my truck backfires twice and it seems like it is about to stall. (this also happens just as im merging into traffic on the parkway) so now when u start it up in the morning it will run fine for about 2-3 min then it wll sound like it is loading up and sounds like its about to stall. when i put it in gear it does the same thing but if i give it any moderate amount of gas it sputters and backfires unless i floor it then it will run ok for a bit then do the same thing. once it gets up to temp to it hardly ever does this. please help
