Newbie...H22 swap help.

have a accord 97' and the engine just gave out on me.
Now I am thinking about getting H22. I have a friend who can get
a 97' H22A USDM and install for $3,600. I think it is a good deal.

I have been doing some research on the H22A engine. My friend told me that
the engine came from "97 Prelude SH." Now, I am confused.
What is so special about Prelude SH? How can I tell that the engine really come from "Prelude SH." I do not want to get ripped off.

Another question is, I already have a turbo kit but it's for accord engine. I am thinking about turbo the H22. I can have it custom fit H22 for $500 but my friend does not recomend turbo H22.

What do I have to do to get 250Hp with out heavy mod or spent too much money?

Please be kind.......

Re: Newbie...H22 swap help.

The H22 came from Prelude VTEC trim. There is an "upgraded" h22a in the type-sh prelude. The only trouble with the turbo kit for the accord, on the prelude, is that the turbo exhaust manifold won't fit due to the h22 having a different manifold - but no problem, as the exhaust manifolds for a turbo h22 are readily available. And selling the Accord one could make you some money for sure.

Anyhow, as for getting it up over 250hp, the H22 can be pushed over 250hp with a small shot of nitrous (50 shot even, and would be rather safe mind you). Umm, otherwise, it'd be easily obtained with bolt-ons, some minor head work, and a set of new camshafts.

The H22, btw, only put out 200hp in the JDM version (the version easily purchasable from engine importers)....the state-side version was only 190hp. There is some debate over that, but for the most part everyone agrees, 190 for the USDM version, and 200hp for the JDM version.

Might want to check out my signature as well

Hope this helps!

- Nathan

Re: Newbie...H22 swap help.

fuel rail....yes
underdrive ...no, different type of belts used on the prelude.

For turbo, no matter which h22 you use, you'd want to lower the compression back a bit. However, you want one of the closed deck h22's, which are those made from 93-97 if my memory serves me right (I just woke up, so I could be wrong). After that, they switched to open deck, which is a weaker block.

Thank for the quick reply.
I am going to take a look at the engines in 2 days.Right now I have to choices
97' and 98' h22. How can I find the information about open and close deck engine? I was looking at 98' because it was newer. Since you told me 98 or later engine had aweaker block. I probable go with the 97' but I want to make sure if the 98' is opened block.

Re: Newbie...H22 swap help.

What is stage 3 ACT? Is it a factory oem HD clutch pressure plate, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing (optional on some cars)and an ACT 6 puk solid high performance ceramic/copper disc combo?

What is diffe between factory oem HD clutch pressure plate, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing (optional on some cars), a ACT 6 puk solid high performance ceramic/copper disc combo and Exedy Racing Pressure Plate, Exedy Organic Full-face Racing Disc, Throwout Bearing, Pilot Bearing (not required), Alignment Tool, XACT StreetLite Racing Flywheel (11.9lbs)?

Which one is better the OEM HD clutch pressure plate with ACT 6 puk solid high performance ceramic/copper disc combo or Exedy Racing Pressure Plate, Exedy Organic Full-face Racing Disc, Throwout Bearing, Pilot Bearing (not required), Alignment Tool?

i forgot the factory oem HD clutch pressure plate with an ACT 6 puk solid high performance ceramic/copper disc combo + FIDANZA FLYWHEEL. is just $361.95

Exedy Organic Racing Clutch Kit & XACT StreetLite Flywheel is $490.

Which one should I get?
