Intresting idea..

i'll admit im a newbee. I just bought my gsx last month. But ive always wonderd and a bit currious what would happen if you rerouted your air conditioning system into your intake pipe or even ypi uip to cool off the return air. has anyone heard of this? is it possable? would this affect the your psi level? Scott

Re: Intresting idea..

a good thought but your air conditioning would take up more power to turn on than you would gain.

Re: Intresting idea..

That's just like using a battery to power your battery charger... to charge your battery.

A/C steals power from the motor, and there is an efficiency below 100%, so you will never regain all of the power in any scenario like this.

Re: Intresting idea..

Its the same scenario as a supercharger. Draws power from the motor to run, but if implemented properly, will result in a net gain in power When you consider what efficient intercooling is worth, losing 20 hp to the AC compressor seems a small price to pay. No matter how much power you make, the AC compressor doesnt draw any more than it does stock. Its not as simple as just blowing cold air into the intake of course. You have to put the AC condenser in your intake path. Not terribly complicated, but takes some fabrication.

This has been done. Flaco Racing did this on a 3rd gen rx7, 2 rotor, and put down 800 to the wheels. Seems to work for them. You might be able to find some info in a search, or if they have a site.

Re: Intresting idea..

I never thought of that hmmmm.like joewagon said, with the power you give up running ac,i don't know if it would be worth it, but if your good ,i guess anything can work

Re: Re: Intresting idea..

you could also get one of those electric blowers on ebay too, oh and one of those resistor mod's....

j/k i think for the $$ it would take to correctly implement the system you could probably find a much more cost effective mod...

Re: Intresting idea..

how bout a custom fmic with a space in it for the relocated ac condenser i dont know about you but in the summer i use my ac so might as well not waste the extra cold coming off the condenser

Re: Intresting idea..

I have heard of people taking bags of ice and putting them on the CAI before the race, and then just before they take it off.

Re: Intresting idea..

IC pipes werent made to transfer heat though, so it doesnt do a whole lot

USing the AC as an intercooler definitely isnt for everyone. But when you have 800 wheel hp and need a lightweight compact IC solution, it can be the way to go. The expense and complexity often is overlooked when its a necessity on a full race car. Of course running methanol would have taken car of that, but thats a whole new can of worms.

Re: Intresting idea..

Again, its not going to do anything. A piece of pipe is a terrible heat exchanger.
