2000 SE front end noise problems (rubbing/moaning?)

Hi all, I originally posted this in another forum then came across this Grand Am-specific one, so I'm cut'n pasting it here as you'll hopefully be able to help me out.

I have a 2000 Grand Am that's been making a loud noise for the past month or so. It's like a rubbing or moaning or vibrating type of noise, and it seems to be coming from the front left section of the car (I assume something to do with the wheel). So here's the poop:

- the noise is loudest when turning RIGHT (not left)
- gets louder the faster I go
- breaks are fine, no resistence/pulsing (I've had warpen rotars on another car before)

The car still drives fine, the tire (front left) isn't marked up at all from what I can see. I have mechanics and others telling me that it could be the rotars, CV joints (but there's no clicking) and that it's fine and I can just leave it...

SO I'm really hoping that someone here has heard of this and can give me some good, informend, and unbiassed opinion because you guys aren't after my hard earned cash

Thanks,

Jevon

Sounds like the Power steering to me. Check the Fluid.

you have a bad front hub and bearing assembly. you just have to figure
out what side it is.most of the time if you hear the noise turning
to the right it is the left front hub .and vise versa.
check it out.

I have a 2000 SE also with 90K+ miles on it. It was making a rubbing/moaning/grinding noise in the front left wheel whenever I would turn left. So, I took it in to find out what the problem was. The noise was traced to the transmission. Luckily, I have a 100K mile warranty on it. I just don't understand why and how it is the transmission. If anyone could explain, please do. It is still in the shop right now, I will keep you updated.

Brakes are broke!

Jevon,
If you visit this website much you will notice that your problem is a recurring one.
There has been much posted and one website has a petition or something going a coalition! against Pontiac to correct the front brake woes of 1999 and newer GAs.
I have a 1999 SE and the front brakes squeal and heat up and this and that. My certified mechanic gives me nothing more than a cheap pair of brake shoes as a diagnosis.
Other posts have included warped rotors, hubs out of tolerance etc, etc. The bottom line is that 1999-newer I dont know how long the same front brake was used) is notorious for noise!!
Squeaking by in LA...

Re: 2000 SE front end noise problems (rubbing/moaning?)

Yes very true , the rotors and pads may be crap. I just had a tranny service recently and I mentioned the sound comming from the left side while making turns. The tec told me if theres trouble in the tranny on 99-up GA's you will hear it from the left side first because the tranny and main drive wheel are on the left , so if it transfers power to the other wheel it makes the noises. He had a better explaination than that but most of it was over my head. At least I know how to check the level of fluid in it now lol. (no dipstic on my tranny)

Re: 2000 SE front end noise problems (rubbing/moaning?)

I remember the first time I tried to check my tranny. I couldn't figure out how I was suppose to get my hand down there and turn that cap to pull it out. lol . Then I read it in the owners manual that you don't need to check it. Never seen anything like it before. I've had noises like that on other cars that was a wheel bearing though. I fix one side (driver side) then about 3 months later the other side is doing it. I think it was from El Nino. To much water in the bearings back then.

Its cool how you check the level in the tranny , a lil bolt under the car if it leaks its over full let it drain till it stops. If you dont notice any come out put more in and check again , wait till it just stops leaking before putting the bolt back on.

Look I have checked the Hub Bearing--(REPLACED) the Tires(ROTATED)- Front End Alignment---All O K---Now I'm being told the Struts need to be changed "PROBABLY????"--Any recommendation-I notice that when I go over a Crown in the road it stops making noise--(I guess the cars weight is off the body for a short period--Soon as it hits the ground It's Back! The noise is faint--not loud-
