trannys

ok in a h22 5th gen they usually come with a ff tranny *front wheel drive*...thus brings up a question... is it possible to do any one of the following : change to a AWD? RWD? 6 speed? along the lines of those questions if any of them are possible will there be any performance loss or gains? thanks if you have any answers to my question

Re: trannys

AWD - Three letters, C-R-V. Swap a K-series motor into your lude, and use the 04+ CRV transmission, with the matching rear-end. Lot's of modification, money, time, parts, and LABOR. This swap is considered impossible, send this idea into Jess James at Monster Garage. If you want to read a little about an experiement with AWD and Honda's, then type in a search engine, "AWD Integra".

RWD - Never been done, never heard o anyone who would have wanted it done, and wonder why anyone would to have it done. If it was possible, then I would go with the setup of the S2000. Your H22 could bolt up to the transmision of an F20C tranny. From there it is alot of fabrication that wil end up near worthless in the end.

6spd - This is a little less wacky of a request...
Honda never manufactured a 6-speed tranny for the H series motors, but you could swap the K-series motor into it. The RSX Type-S has a 6-speed manual tranny in it, so if you get the K motor swapped, then look forward to 6-speeds.

I understand that you probably aren't serious about this swap idea, that's exactly why it is an idea. Your question has really got me thinking about the topic of different drivetrains. Thanks for the thoughts

Re: trannys

With enough cash and fabrication skills, anything is possible. Del, I know, has some pictures of a turbocharged RWD 5th Gen Prelude.

A new drivetrain has alot of benefits ~ less of a drivetrain loss, better handling... I would not mind if my Prelude was AWD.

There has been talk of a K series motor from an RSX Type S into a Prelude before. It has more potential than the h22a from what I hear, despite both being 200hp and the RSX having slightly more torque.

I see big dollar signs floating around while reading this entire thread.

Re: trannys

I can name several reasons.

Balance. Torque Steer and Understeer (The notorious Greater Evil of FWD). Handling. Traction/Weight Shift.

There are reasons why the top performance cars are RWD instead of FWD. AWD is just a union of the two, combining the best of both worlds.

Re: trannys

best of both worlds??? Sure, if you go the heavy route. I prefer Middle engine. I mean, is there really any performance drawback on that setup? Lewd, I know what the differences are, the gains, the fallbacks, I don't need a tech article. LOL, just messing with ya man, I know you're only trying to help, its all good. :-)

Re: trannys

Besides, why would I want to go RWD unless I was a hardcore drag racer or drifter? Until a certain power range, the front wheel setup is just fine. The Prelude doesn't have THAT bad of understeer, but it is noticeable. Thank god for that 4WS. We all know it has to have it's drawback's too though. Why else would Honda have ditched it in 94?

Re: trannys

AWD rocks ass. Launch is awesome (even better than RWD launches), superb handling, plus it's practical; AWD is fantastic in snow.

You exaggerated weight a little bit, the difference between the AWD GSX and FWD GST is about 200 lbs; Theoretically the GSX is slower by two tenths of a second, but the AWD makes up for the weight.

Drivetrain loss is considerably less.

Re: trannys

So I guess the compensation makes up for it. But it's like I said, once you get down in the7-8 second range, a good set of drag slicks on a rear wheel drive can' be beat. But the fastest cars in the street tire classes are either RWD, or the more dominant AWD. The only reason these cars run good in street is because they have to run street worthy tires.

Re: trannys

Well after reading everyone comments I would like to know what engines if I ever desided to would have a AWD setup and RWD setup that are great for moding and have great HP. I like the JDM H22 with the s type setup for its great HP *223hp*...also what i like about the H22 is the ability to have a supercharger and a turbo in it... if i changed to a AWD or RWD engine would i still have the same possiblities? thanks for the help everyone!

Re: trannys

I thought it was like 221hp. Any car is able to be turbocharged or supercharged, and the h22a is not exactly the best candidate for that until you do some tweaking.

You're looking at about 6-7 grand for a drivetrain change. Turbocharging is about 2k, and preparing the engine for a turbo runs near 4 grand. Type S h22a's run about 3-4k, putting it in is probably another grand.

All that together, and you might as well buy a different car for your troubles and cash. In large scale project cars, there's almost always something that goes wrong, and you have to shell out even more cash to fix it.
