top speed of a 1996 maxima

i have had my 96 maxima for 4 years. i have only had v8s since i was 16. i am very imppressed with the perfomance i get from my 5sp. Max. I never go to the track, but i smoke ALL cars in my class on I-285 in Atl. a dealer told me the maximas horsepower is truly underated, for those who dont have maximas. and i believe it. does anyone know what top speed is for the 1996 year? mines is governed at 120mph, but i can easily bypass it by diconnecrting the speedometer. I get 120 in 4th gear at 4000~4300 rpm. when i disconnect the speedometer hit 120 in 4th, then shift to 5th, it is another world. i was racing a ZX9 ninja (just 4 fun) to see how fast i was going, he said i was doing at least 145mph. I burnt 2002 Volvo S80, 2000 gran prix gtp or gtx(whatever), 325 bimmer, 2003 dodge hemi truck, ran with a 96 impala SS(top end)and many others mention. all i did was take out the stock air box, and put a cone air filter in. a full tank used to give me 388 mile, with that new air filter i get 410~420 mi per tank, and when its raining i can spin thru 5th gear(no lie) i always catch 2nd, and sometime 3rd. whats the real deal with this car? its it truly underrated, and what the top speed ungoverned?

also my girl has a 2001 sentra, for full coverage, mines is 3x the amount of her car

Well this is what i heard that on the 5sp gxe max u cant go above then 120mph but if you have the Se 5sp then u will hit about 140-145's.. or thats what i heard, also you said somthing about "new air filter i get 410~420 mi per tank" well i wanna know what new air filter it is i mean like stock or upgraded or whatever lse it might be. If you can post the details on my forum and give me a link to this filter if possable.. thnx later

i will have to get back to u on the name of the filter. but thats a lie on the 120. i get one 120 in 4th gear and i have a 96gxe. it only slows down because of the governor. i can easily get 130mph in 4th gear stock. the only thing i have to read is my RPMs

I saw on a dyno that a 95 se would go no higher than 152 mph and that's without wind factor. probably 140-145. SE's and GLE's are not governed. and gxe's can have the governor removed by

1.Disconnect negative battery terminal.
2.remove ECU cover from passenger side footwall.
3.Loosen bolt in center of main ECU connector.
4.Unplug main ECU connector.
5.Remove snap-on plastic cover from ECU connector.
6.Locate PINK wire with BLUE stripe. (this wire is located on the right half of the connector when plugged in)
7.Cut PINK/BLUE wire.
8.Reassemble ECU connection.
9.Reconnect negative battery terminal.

i didn't know disconnecting the speedo would work too but with the ecu mod you can watch the speedo hit 140+. unfortunately it causes you to throw a CEL.

My SE is governed. It stops at exactly 118mph. I went 125 once going downhill. It accelerates so fast to 118 and just stops. I hate it.

are your sure it's an SE. I'm positive SE's are not governed cuz in my 95 se I went 136 while racing a 3.2 CL type S.

well my 3rd gen tops out at 125 governed amd i know it can hit more than that. at least 135, 140

When we had our 96 GXE 5 speed, it would rush to 120 then the
gov. kicked in.. SE five speeds arent supposed to have a gov. and
best Ive read for stock is 143 MPH.. Maybe his SE is a auto. thats
why it wont go any faster?

Anyone know the top speed for a 98 GLE auto. I once did around ~115 MPH but had to stop due to traffic.

I'm very sure it's an SE. Got it brand new in 97. It's an Automatic though.

my 97 auto has been to 135. It's alot easier if you have OD off then turn it on at 120mph (about 6300rpms)
