1998 Chevy Blazer Brake Lights Stopped working.
I have a 1998 blazer and all my brake lights stopped working..
I have been reading on hear about some recalls that seem to represent this problem. I will describe a the problem the best I can. None of the brake lights work. Not even the led bar on top. All the fuses are good. Wiring appears to be ok. No burns or breaks that I can tell at this point. All other lights work perfectly Hazzards tail lights turn signals etc.. Everything appears to be fine in that relm.. The Dealer mentioned to me that the multi function switch could cause this problem. So I check to see what a multi function switch would cost.. Well to no supprise they are about $200.00 Anyhow I am looking for some suggestions or any information that anyone would have on this issue.. Thanks Steve |

Re: 1998 Chevy Blazer Brake Lights Stopped working.
it's probably that multifunction switch smack the top of the steering column a few times and see if you have brake lights. other things to check are the fuse, brake pedal switch & wiring. 90% of the time it's that piece of crap switch. good luck

Brake pedal switch.. are you talking about the switch that is mounted to the pedal? Does anyone know which wire off that connector is for the brake ligths? or where I might find a good wiring diagram for this vehicle.
Thanks Steve |

yes the switch at the pedal. it should apply 12v to the white wire when pressed. what i meant in my above post is 90% of the time it's the multifunction switch. sometimes wires break off where they go into the switch but most of the time it's internal. if you go to your library they should have a manual with a good diagram.

Re: 1998 Chevy Blazer Brake Lights Stopped working.
What is the best way to diagnose the Multifunction switch? I did the beating scene and that did not seem to have any effect...
I hate to do a trial and error test at $200.00 a pop... Thanks a bunch Steve |

Re: 1998 Chevy Blazer Brake Lights Stopped working.
I JUST replaced the multi-function switch for another problem - continuous blinker noise. Yeah, it's expensive. The counter guy said they go bad all the time. I'm not sure if this is your problem but try wiggling the hazard switch part, hold it down further, etc., and see if it affects your brake lights. Do your hazard lights flash???
And, check that brake pedal switch. too. LOL |

I have a 2000 blazer and my main brake lights quit working. My light bar still works, my turn signals work, and my hazard lights work if I mess with the button. Is the button part of the multi function switch?

Re: 1998 Chevy Blazer Brake Lights Stopped working.
I believe the brake lights are on the same circuit as the interior buzzer and dome light b/c last year I had no brake lights and didn't know it until I was notified by my friendly State Trooper. I remembered I had no interior buzzer either and realized it must be more than a coincidence. I put a new fuse in there and all worked. If those dont work either, its in your wiring or fuses. If those work, then you need to look into that switch.

My lights don't work half the time either. I have to jiggle the hazard switch. But my third light does work which means it is probably not wired through the hazard switch. I'm tempted to bypass the switch but haven't gotten around to it. (Secretly hoping to get rear-ended!). I notice GM has has recalls for this in later models but not my 1997. I'm waiting for one!
Oh. Haven't had much luck getting a used one from junkyards. Apparently the switch gets destroyed when the air bag deploys. Nice design GM! |

Go to a wrecking yard and get the switch from them instead of buying new.

I had the same thing happen last year (no brake lights at all) on my 2000 Blazer. Thanks to the help of this forum, I found it was the switch under the dash attached to the brake pedal. I picked it up at Autozone. I don't think I paid over $25-$30 for it though. Installation was a pain in the patootie though with getting my big clumsy hands in there.

Does the multi function control also control your dome lights and also when u shut the truck off and the radio is supposed to stay on and it doesnt does this control this? I have this problem and also the constant turn signal too.
