Depends on the car/engine. If the car has a V-style engine (ex. V6 or V8) then having true dual exhaust (2 headers, 2 pipes going straight back to the tips) would flow better than having single exhaust. For an inline engine with only one header, it probably doesn't make a difference. Although, dual exhaust sure does look cool.

Advantages on a 4 cylinder:
-If you like the looks....

Disadvantages:
-Loss of hp due to the lost backpressure in the exhaust
-Many will think you're a ricer

Advantages on V6's and V8's:
-Less restriction = more hp

Disadvantages on V6's and V8's:
-Can't think of any
