Universal Blow Off Valve. Which one should i buy?

I really dont want to spend veary much $ on a Blow off Valve. These are the ones im looking serisouly at.. I'm really not sure what the diffrence in quality is between the universal fitted bov's & the made to vehical ones. Maybe somone can help me. Why are Universal bov's so much less expensive? arn't they the same thing?? They must have diffrent max boost pressures, hu? Please tell me what one would be best for a 96 gsx with no turbo upgrades. I'll more then likley be removing the Boost Control Solenoid Restrictors smaller valve to get that extra 2-3 psi. i want to make sure that the psi levels i want in the future (18-25) will work with my new BOV, becasue i will be looking forward to installing a nice new FMI, Pipes & turbo this summer. nothing huge. 18g maybe EVO III. So please tell me which ones look best for that type of application. thank'ya

Re: Universal Blow Off Valve. Which one should i buy?

It looks like those are from a broad site. You should try to look at DSM vendors, then you will know which ones to choose from. For example, at machv you might see greddy, turboxs, hks.. etc all specific for the car.

Anyway, you can get a 1g stock BOV for ~50 dollars used which will more than suit you. Good luck.

Re: Universal Blow Off Valve. Which one should i buy?

"Universal" BOVs are generally cheaper because they dont include the adapters, flanges, elbows, etc that are needed to make it a "bolt on" project. You pay more for the convience. Do like Joe said and see what is offered specifically for DSMs. If this is a custom project state what the goals are for the car, and what mods you plan to run. Just the important ones, like air metering and turbo size. For a stock turbo setup, and even a good bit bigger, I would follow Joes recomendation of a 40 dollar 1g BOV. Get a UICP flanged for it, and it bolts on, and that needs to be upgraded early on anyway. Many aftermarket BOVs come flanged for a 1g anyway, but youre paying the price for the adapters again. A hardcore BOV like Tial will be weld on only, but its only 200 bucks. Get a spring that matches your setup and you may never have to upgrade again.

Again, it depends on the goals for the car, and your budget.

so universal bov, don't have the adaptaive supplies included to bolt right on my car from the box, and, say apexi's 551-KM01 (made for 96gsx) does?

Re: Universal Blow Off Valve. Which one should i buy?

I'm going to assume it does, but I am not terribly familiar with the big name brand parts. Some quick searching will answer that question for you, or a quick call to a DSM vendor that carries them. Perhaps someone here has personal experience with the above mentioned valves. The example I have is the RFL from TurboXS. Its another 50 bucks for the DSM flange adapter and required 90 degree elbow (so it clears the hood on stock style UICPs).

If you dont have the money to spend on an expensive blowoff valve.. .Save yourself a LOT of money.. and just get a 1g BOV...The best upgrade for our cars, it works, no stallin issues, durable, and cant hold just as much boost as the expensive ones.. Then you have more money to spend on other parts... You can find an adapter for it on Ebay for about $20s.. A Greddy adapter will work too. you just need to drill different holes...

Re: Universal Blow Off Valve. Which one should i buy?

well i dont have much of a problem spending money, thats always been preaty easy for me. The problem is Overspending (paying for the name). no one seems to know much about Apexi. Seems like everyone likes to spend 200+ for an Hks or Greedy & Blitz. Apexi is alot less expensive. Maybe somone who has one can respond to this Thread and can tell me how the performance is? last thing i want is to respond to my own thread and say it was 175 wasted on a knockoff.. so hit it up if you have an apexi, please tell me how its doing for you.. thanks..

I really haven't heard of anyone using an Apexi BOV on a DSM. I would go with a trusted unit, but I'm sure the Apexi won't be a piece, but more expensive, yes.

If im right the Apex vents to the atmosphere... and cant be returned into the intake like an HKS or GReddy... You might be taking a chance on your car not being able to vent, stalling, and then having to sell it.. have you tried disconnecting your return hose to make sure your car can vent? might want to try doing that before you go and blow $200

HEres a link you might want to check out.. People post and give opinions about dsm products..

This one goes straight to the BOvs

DSM Review BOVs

and heres the one to the main sight if anyone wants to check out the other opinions on other stuff

Re: Universal Blow Off Valve. Which one should i buy?

Bad combination with the stock airflow sensor, doesnt matter which turbo. With a MAFt in blow through you can properly run a BOV to atmosphere. I had to make this swap to run vented BOVs like Tial and SARD.

Not sure what you mean. I promise, the 1g used BOV will do plenty of good for you. If you need the expensive brand name ones, go with a HKS or TurboXS that recirculates.
