1995 Accord Speedometer Problem- PLEASE HELP!!!
My speedometer works 10% of the time. I turn the car on and the neddle jumps right to 20MPH. As I accelerate, it does bounce between 15 and 25, but hardly ever kicks in- and when it does there is no rhyme or reason to it. The check engine light has never come on, and yes- the bulb does work. Cruise control ALSO works!! I can't find the vss to check it. But if the check engine light never came on, could it just be the instrument cluster???
I am assuming that since the speedometer is moving a little bit between 15 and 25 that some signal from the vss IS present, is the speedometer just not registering corectly, or is the vss supplying a useless signal- since cruise control does work, I believe the instrument cluster is at fault. I need help and can't afford a mistake here.. Please help me!! 1995 Honda accord 2 door EX 4 cyl vtec automatic Last edited by Billfm876; 03-17-2004 at 12:59 AM. |

If the speed sensor were bad ... the cruise would not set. Since the cruise does set and hold a steady speed .. your problem points directly to the speedometer head. |

Re: 1995 Accord Speedometer Problem- PLEASE HELP!!!
I have the same problem!!! I swapped out entire gauge clusters....and the needle still jumps to 20mph as soon as I turn the key. However, now my needle does go up as I accelerate instead of just bouncing....it's just 20 mph over what I'm actually doing. Are speedometer heads notorious for going bad?? Let me know what you find out because this problem is bugging the hell out of me.

Re: 1995 Accord Speedometer Problem- PLEASE HELP!!!
On my 94 accord ex....I removed the speedometer from the gauge cluster and found a circuit board that plugs into the back of the speedometer motor....I'm going to say that is the speedometer head. I've fixed my problem, by the way! I swapped my speedometer assembly out with another one and it works fine. It would also jump to 20mph when the key was turned on, but it would accelerate from there when I would go. So, I turned the key on, and removed the needle...then I placed it back on at the 0mph mark....now it works perfectly.

You need to check the tsb on you car. I have a 95 accord and the speedo stoped at 15-20 mhp. I replace the speedo with a used one. Go to ebay for about 20 dollars you can have a used speedo.

I have a 96 Accord and it did the same thing. Replacing the speedometer head fixed it right up. I'd be weary of replacing your current speedo with a used one on Ebay because they are notorious for going bad and you'd probly have the same problem again in the future

Re: 1995 Accord Speedometer Problem- PLEASE HELP!!!
This is definitely my problem, where the speedometer sticks at 20 MPH and the odometer doesn't work in the meantime. I think the speedometer head will fix things, but can anyone be more specific as to how to replace it and exactly where it is located in the cluster??

Re: 1995 Accord Speedometer Problem- PLEASE HELP!!!
I had the same problem with my 1995 Honda accord. I took it to Honda dealer. He gave me an estimate of $ 305.80 plus labour. I called around for used clusters and the least expensive one was $250.00 with 300 K on it. With my son's help I pulled the cluster out and took it apart. The Speedometer assembly is a unit in itself and cones out quite easily. It has a printed circuit board and a tiny motor which drives the needle. Luckily I had a used 99 Honda civic cluster sitting in the garage with Identical circuit board. I swapped the circuit boards and tested. Ahluluia!!! it worked. There is God!!. Hope this helps.

Re: 1995 Accord Speedometer Problem- PLEASE HELP!!!
I had the same problem and I got the printed circuit changed. The speedo works now, but I am seeing an intersting problem. The accuracy of the speed is OFF big time. I compared it with the GPS and when GPS is 60 mph the speedometer is 70 mph. The tires are stock and properly inflated. I just compared the GPS speed with one of the other accords and its almost same may be off by 1 ~ 2 percent. What could be the reason ? Has anyone seen this happen to you ?
