failed smog

I tried taking my car to a local smog shop, and they said they couldn't put the car through the computer because it was a DOHC jdm motor. I am going to a referee on March 26th and was wondering if anyone knew what they do there, or if it should pass?

Re: failed smog

well it won't pass because they know everything that's supposed to be there stock. what i would do is swap the stock motor in and then swap it back after you go to the ref. or you could try and buy a usdm intake manifold and all the us emissions devices and see if he's fooled but i don't think he will be. see the only way that a swapped motor is legal is if it has all of the stock emissions control devices and it has to be of the same year or newer. i'm almost positive that it has to be usdm also. just swap the motor out

Re: failed smog

yeah just swap the motor out
Does your car have a catalytic converter? I'd put on as many stock parts you can, like the intake and shit..

Re: failed smog

Any update on your situation. I'm curious to know what happened. I have been contemplating on doing a swap. The main thing that's holding me back is the smog test...

The way to pass smog w/ a swapped motor has been explained before I just don't remember in which forum. I think JDM motors pass as long as they have all of the USDM counterpart emission control devices hooked to it

Re: failed smog

Is the smog test the same as the emissions test when you go for inspection? I failed: NOX and HC to high.

Re: failed smog

I C cuz i failed my first one, changed plugs, adjusted the valves, changed O2 senser, and retarded timing, and i came alittle closer to passing. This week im spraying my intake manifold with carb. cleaner to get the carbon buildup off. Heard that would help me.

Re: failed smog

i had a jdm b18c in my crx and couldn't pass, but me and my dad took it to a shop that specializes in motor swaps and they made the engine look like a stock b18c...and we got a certificate for the ecu saying that it was US ecu...then we had the wire harness fixed...and took it to the state ref and passed...he was easy on us though cuz we went to the ref more then twiced...so yea maybe u could try these things, but trust me it gets costly...

Re: failed smog

Why don't you just find a relative that lives somewhere where smog tests aren't required and than just register your car under their name? That's what my uncle has done, and I know my dad has a Lexus under his name and he's only driving an Accord.
