1991 Grand Am Idles, runs good until in gear

I have a 1991 Grand Am that starts and runs great until you put it in Gear. Then it starts spitting and sputtering. It has an automatic transmission. When you drive it on the road it feels like it runs on all 4 cylinders sometimes and then acts like it is loosing a cylinder. That might just be my imagination. I appreciate any help on this matter. My girlfriend has a new Baby and I don't want to see her stranded. Thanks!
