Re: engine swat, sl to vr4?

Read other posts on this forum. Plenty of people ask the same questions. Its a difficult job, and you're gonna have to find a vr4 that's willing to part with its engine and turbos. (ie. wrecked). Then you will have traction issues to deal with...might just be easier to go vr4, unless you want to keep the FWD...

Yeah I would say save up for a VR4... The FWD is what stopped me from doing a swap. 'Cause I have enough traction issues as it is right now, I couldn't imagine what it would be like if I put more power in it.... Can't beat AWD...

i'd go for a vr4 for a couple of reasons

first off, your gonna have traction problems
not only are you gonna have to find an engine with complete parts, your gonna have to either have the skills to install it yourself or pay someone else to install it
next your gonna have to spend another grand for LSD or else you'll blow a hole in you transmission and have to buy a new one
you will also have to upgrade your clutch because your oem clutch will burn out within 500 miles
even with LSD, you will wont get the traction that a VR-4 has, after you get going, you will start to pull on the vr-4, but then the fwd mtx gearing kicks in at 4th gear and the vr-4 will pull away like nothing because of taller gears

reason i have fwd tt #1 i'm atx so i dont have near the traction problems, i can actually get through first without spinning at all, #2 i wanted an automatic turbo, #3 i didnt need LSD because my tranny does not have as much stress on it, #4 i have taller gears than the fwd mtx and therefore can still move after 105 which i proved when racing a vr-4 up top

Re: engine swat, sl to vr4?

Hey, SpeedFreakSteve on 3si.org http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread.php?t=198122 is swapping his SOHC for a TT, plus he's changing over to AWD. He's documenting the whole thing, he'd be a good guy to talk to.

to convert to AWD, you will have to do a whole lot of custom fabrication to the rear as the rear frames on the AWD cars are different from FWD cars. You better have some knowledge and access to a VR-4 parts car if you want to convert to AWD
