Possible transaxle or brake problem

I have a 74 super beetle and when I start going and when I am coming to a stop I hear what sounds like a rubbing noise that maybe sounds like the brakes are rubbing, but I am not sure. Does anyone have any ideas about what it may be?

Thanks! I checked it out today and found that the e-brake was causing teh shoe to slip and it was rubbing, so I am going to be doing a total brake overhaul this weekend!!!!!!!!!
