Re: cd changer and compatible headunit prices?

Is there a reason why you want to go with a factory model?

There are some very nice aftermarket CD players (inlcuding MP3) for very low prices.

I replaced my factory unit with a Sony unit that plays Cds inclyding mp3s and it is great.

well, my mom likes to keep the "factory" look. but if it does get to be expensive for the factory changer, i will look into an aftermarket model.

I just replaced the factory am/fm/cassette head unit in my 2001 with a factory am/fm/cd unit from eBay. Picked it up for $86 total. All you need for the 1999+ is a set of DIN tools (small "U" shaped forks) to insert in the holes along the sides of the stereo. The stereo pulls straight out. Just unplug the old one, plug in a new one, slide it back in until it "clicks" and you are all set! Check eBay for a new head unit, there's TONS of 'em.

Understood!!!

Also try an autowreckers. They usually have them too. Rodeo is correct they are very easy to remove with the tools.

The 1995-1998's are different (smaller) than the 1999-2003, I think yours is called single DIN, as opposed to the larger double DIN on 1999-2003. Your model can still be had on eBay if want to stay OEM. Like DRW1000 suggests- yours is an ideal candidate for an aftermarket unit being single DIN. Try www.carstereohelp.com if you need removal instructions.

Re: cd changer and compatible headunit prices?

I am not sure about the windstar units prior to 99. I know my 99 is (as Rodeo mentioned) a double DIN size. My mother owns a 96 Mercury Villager that uses the same double din as I have.

This of course does not mean that the Winstars used the same units but it is possible.

If you have a single DIN space than you will find a mindboggling amount of units to fit. If you do decide to go aftermarket you can buy kits to fit a single DIN into a double DIN space or you can easily make your own cover as I did using smoked Acrlylic (plexiglass).

Good idea! There also are kits specifically designed to allow a single DIN to fit the double DIN opening. Basically it's a snap in face plate with a small storage pocket + an opening for a single DIN after market style head unit.
