need some help...

My friend has a 98 civic hatch.We were adjusting his valves and changing all of his fluids.oil,trans,and coolant.we moved the crank so that we could releive the valves tention.take in mind that we did not take off the timing belt or any of this crap.we lowered the car and when he went to start it it wouldn start.the car is cranking over but nothing.im no stranger to working on cars but im stunned.im going to see if his spark plug wires are throwing out sparks.but if anybody out there had this similer prob i need ur help.thanx in advance
