little off topic, but need brake help
Ok, so I know that this is the wrong forum for this question, but hear me out. Essentially I am posting it here rather then the pontiac forum simply because I seem to get more knowledgable responses when I post questions here.
My girlfriend just got a 01 grand am se about a month ago. the dealer was a dick and said that the squealing she was hearing was "moisture in the brakes" then they inspect it before selling it to her and said it was fine. Eventually I drove this thing and immediately could tell that the brake pad metal warning thing was making the noise. So I jack the car up take off the wheel. Long story short. The inside pad on the passenger side front wheel was non-existent. (About 1mm thick...if even) so I am pissed thinking this has to be illegal. So my first question is how do they go about inspection? Are they required to check every pad? Or just one front and one rear? Is it possible that they didn't realize or did they dick her over. So anyway, she was really frustrated about already not having a car for a few weeks while in the process of replacing her car that was wrecked. So I immediately order ceramic pads and put them on. the rotors were smooth, no grooves, no vibrations, nothing. So I figured they didn't need to be resurfaced. So I throw on some lubricant, put the pads in, presto...car works beatifully for a week or 2. So 3 days ago, we are driving back home from school, about 180miles. with a little ways to go, the wheel makes a weird noise, and it almost sounds like we have a flat tire. There was just a rotating noise going with the tire, but it wasn't a flat. But that was honestly my first impression. After awhile it dissappears. So i think its no big deal, maybe just something caught in the wheel well. Then a bit later, the brakes (just driver side front) start squealing. And they get progressively worse. We pull in the driveway and im tired so I decide that I'll check it out the next day. So I jack the car up, take off the wheel and see nothing out of the ordinary, except that for some reason, the inside of hte driverside rotor has rust and looks like its been a worn, but this is only about 1 inch thick closest to the outer circumference. I clean off some brake dust and put the wheel back on. Problem solved...for 20 mins, then while driving after 5 or so miles, it starts squealing and it gets worse...again. So today, I take a detailed look at it. I figured maybe the calipher was loose or something, because it seems as if only the inside pad is doing most of the work. the brakes are only 1 piston per caliper, so I took off the caliper spread some lub (didn't have any more so just spread what was on), I got some brake dust off the rotor, and tightened up the 2 guide bolts that held the caliper in place...Tightened them as hard as possible, figuring that the pressure from the caliper was being distributed unequally. So took it for a test drive and it was working fine for 5 miles or so, and then it started squealing again. So tomorrow we have to drive back to school and this is pissing us both off. So the plan is to get the rotors resurfaced, buy more lub and lub the hell out of the shims, then tighten the caliper on as hard as possible... So sorry this is a long post, but I am wondering if I am missing something obvious, my mitsu brakes worked fine when I replaced the pads on them. Didn't use any lub, just slapped in the metal matrix pads and it was fine, the rotors were fine and didn't need any work on them. So I am wondering waht the hell is wrong with this one. I don't think the rotor is warped, but perhaps. Mind you this was on the other wheel from the pad that was worn down the worst last time. I tightened the lug nuts rather equally, so I don't think its warped. What would cause the outer inch to be worn on just the inside of the rotor. And what needs to be done to make the noise stop. No vibration or anything comes through the pedal. Any advice..? |

Re: little off topic, but need brake help
well ill start off with the obvious after you put them on did you slam on the brakes? if so take them off rub them on some concrete and put them back on, if not this dealer is a complete backwards ass person go there and talk to someone important if they can't help talk to the source of the car GM eventually it will get taken care of because it sounds like this might be the braking system not the pads

Re: little off topic, but need brake help
Ok, thanx for the reply. First off, you are correct, the sales guy is a dick and will be dealt with. HOwever, problem at hand...what I did was to buy some anti-squeal lub gunk...that causes 8 different kinds of cancer if ingested...and sprayed it all over the shims, caliper bolts, and piston. Then I got sand paper and sanded the rough/rusted "inch" of the rotor to smooth it out. We drove 180 miles with almost no squealing. Now, it squeals very little and only at slow speeds, So I know its not the pads because I think they would squeal at all speeds. O yeah and just to answer, no I didn't slam on the brakes after putting on the pads, I did my normal "break in/mating them to the caliper" and went through a few cooling cycles when first replacing them.
What it looks like to me is that the the calipers were a bit loose and that the top half of the inside pad was being applied the most pressure(cheap ass one piston brake systems). This caused the uneven wear. Anyway, I am just going to get the rotor resurfaced, because I think the original looseness caused the uneven wear and vibration, and therefore the squealing. All in all, that all of this should ensure her brakes work and sound fine. Sorry for hijacking the forum, I just was irritated with the repeating problems this car has already experienced. |
