My 2003 Silverado 2wd has developed an annoying sqeak from the right rear brake when driving. At low speeds it is a "chirp, chirp, chirp." As speed increases to 60 or so, it turns in to more of a steady sqeal. It stops as soon as I push the brake pedal, even if I just barely push it, then returns as soon as I release the brake. Besides being very annoying, I am afraid that whatever it is that's rubbing might cause some damage. Anyone know what could cause this?
I hate taking a vehicle to the dealership, but might have to. Thanks! Deadduck |

Re: Annoying Brake Squeak - 2003 Silverado
sounds like the anti-squeal shim has come loose from the pad. what happens is it moves up and down in the pocket holding the pad and makes that racket. you could get some new anti-squeal shims, take out your pads and glue the new shims in, or they may have sticky stuff already on them. JUMA

Thanks! What exactly does the shim look like? Will it be obvious when I take the wheel off? Can I get a new one at the local parts store?
Thanks again! Deadduck |

Re: Annoying Brake Squeak - 2003 Silverado
they are flat thin pieces of metal about the same profile as a side view of the brake pad. they usually have glue on one side to stick to the brake pad.

sounds like a worped brake drum, make sure you look for cracks in the drum when you remove it.

Re: Annoying Brake Squeak - 2003 Silverado
i bet the inner pad on the right rear is worn down to nothing and the squeeler's telling you to change the pads. i've changed a ton of pads on these trucks mud and rocks contaminate the friction material. sometings rocks get jammed in the groove at the middle of the pad and squeel. a new set of gm pads will come with new antirattle clips too.
good luck. |

I forgot to mention that the truck only has 4500 miles on it, so I hope the rotor isn't warped or pads worn out. Never know, though.
I had thought about a rock or something wedged in there. I am going to pull my wheel off tomorrow and see if I can figure it out. Thanks! |

Re: Annoying Brake Squeak - 2003 Silverado
have a look at the shop i worked at it wasn't unusual to see trucks with about 10,000 kms on them and the inside pad worn to the metal. aparently gm has a buliten for this i don't know the number but if you check with your dealer they'll give you the story there's some kind of mud flap that prevents mud and rocks from messing up the pads on the right rear. unfortunatly brake work isn't coverered under warranty.
