94 camry rear lights not workin when backin up

i have a 94 camry that decides to not turn on backing up lights when the car is in reverse. The dash light is fine on P but when i shift to R, usually the R light (on dash) doesn't come on when i have just started the car from cold (which means that the reverse lights also do not turn on).
When the R light on the dash is on, my rear lights come on. When my R light is out, my rear lights are out.

The brake lights work perfectly everytime tho.

Also, sometimes the D doesn't come on when I put it in drive.
usually after i've driven for a while, and I try to put it in R again, it will work. Sometimes, I have to nudge the shifter a little bit to get the R light to light up. I have already taken it into a shop to get it fixed, but then it broke again, and so I want to try to fix it myself.

i'm pretty sure it's a wiring problem.

It does sound like a wiring problem.The first place to look is the hinge area in the trunk.Try to jiggle the wires while observing the lights.

wiring or the cable needs to be adjusted. im just about to go adjust mine now. it does the same thing almost. i have to play with the selector to get them to come on. ill let ya know if it worked.

U need a safety netural switch it is going bad! it is on the trans where the cable goes down to the trans! I have replaced a buch of them in my time
