Fuel Guage went out.
About 3 weeks ago my fuel guage stopped working a week ago. It's just stuck in the middle it doesn't ready E and it doesn't ready Full. Could this be a fuse? 97 Ford Escort 87k.
Any suggestions as to how to correct this problem. |

Re: Fuel Guage went out.
In my experience it is rarely the gauge that has gone bad, so I tend to start with the sending unit.
The sending unit, unless Ford changed its ways and I am unaware, is combined with the fuel pump and is inside the tank. You can access this area thtough the backseat. Remove the seat and you will have access to the top of the tank. |

Re: Fuel Guage went out.
And this Sending Unit is right there. Does it need to be possibly replaced? How would you go about telling if it were bad or not?

Re: Fuel Guage went out.
First my disclaimer... I have never actually removed this component from the gas tank, so this is speculation for the most part. I do know that you can access the top of the tank through the rear seat.
As I understand it, the feul sending unit and the pump are a combined part. I do not know that you can replace just one and leave the other. Unfortunately, I do not know a way to test the sending unit. Maybe someone else will speak up. The process of removing it and cleaning it up may get things working again, but don't forget, it could still be the gauge. I just think that is very unlikely. Sorry I can't be more helpful here, but I do think I am pointing you in the right direction. |

on a 92 there's a couple of fuses under the rear seat. if you remove the pump assy from the tank, you can use an ohm meter on the sending unit to see if it's bad. one lead to ground and the other to sending unit wire. when you move the float up and down the resistance should change according to the position of the float
