It is wise to put a light weight chromoly 9 pounder on a stock clutch? I got a 90 accord by the way

It won't hurt but while your down there why don't you install a better clutch?

Hes gotten to hit the nail on the head for me. You must take it all apart and a better clutch is a great idea esp if its apart any way.

Re: Light Flywheel on Stock Clutch?

na with a lite weight fly you engine will rev faster. Yeah since you have you trans case open you will want to get a new clutch pressure plate and throwout bearing. and i would get new shifter bushings also since your down there

Re: Light Flywheel on Stock Clutch?

ok ive decided on getting an ACT 12 lb streetlite fly but for the clutch i dunno what to get. Is centerforce a good respectable brand or shall i go with ACT or Exedy? Kinda low on money so if centerforce is good enough then im gonna settle for that. Just need anything to replace stock broken clutch.

Re: Light Flywheel on Stock Clutch?

exedy..unless its a pro-line is just more a replacement clutch... See if centerforce makes a dual friction for that vehicle..its a good mild street clutch that can take the abuse of a lighter fly and harder launches...ACT makes some good kits but i have been hearing alot of good things about Compitition Clutches lately..there buy one of the founders of Clutch Masters..i would see what they offer...are you eveer planning on nos or a turbo or anything ?

Re: Light Flywheel on Stock Clutch?

nah i dont think i have any plans for nos or turbo. At most i was gonna swap to an h22 in my 90 accord. It would be able to use the same clutch and fly if i were to engine swap. All i wanted to do it intake, header, catback, MSD SCI, ss blaster coil, spark plug wires, drop, and fly/...maybe clutch if needed. My clutch is already breaking down so i dunno if it is worth it to just buy a whole new upgraded clutch or just have the stock one fixed (depending what it is)

okay well check out the stage 1 street applications for Compitition Clutches, Clutch Masters, ACT and the centerforce dual friction ..all are about the same..matter of preference...altho i think youll like the centerforce dual friction

Re: Light Flywheel on Stock Clutch?

how come u think i would like the centerforce dual friction clutch? It doesnt really matter on clutches unless u are launching right or running high hp... like 200+

Re: Light Flywheel on Stock Clutch?

actually it matters alot, theres diff set-ups that use diff pressureplates and so forth and this bases on your pedal feel and stiffness. Do you want to be driving around in traffic on a relatively stock accord pushing a ACT stage 2 clutch with heavy duty pressure plate ?? i would think not ! you want somethin with a better holding compacity but with a still relativly soft pedal feel..maybe a lil more on the medium side..hints why i asked you about nos or a turbo... a stage 1 clutch with a lighter duty pressure plate will give you a good increase in holding compacity but will still give you a good pedal..hints why i said check out the centerforce dual friction, it raises your holding compacity close to a 100% if im not mistaken ( but dont quote me ) and it gives a real nice soft/firm pedal feel which is good for daily driving but still being aggrisive with the clutch itself...so dont tell me there all the same unless your launching because its not true, drive a stage 1 clutch and street plate and then drive a 4 puck spring and heavy duty plate and see the diff. !!

Re: Light Flywheel on Stock Clutch?

Oh no no no i already know how all the different clutches work and what kind of applications are for. Thanx tho for typing it.

Sorry for my poor explaination... I meant the difference on using a stock clutch on the 12 pounder and a aftermarket clutch on a 12 pounder. I kno ill have more holding capacity w/ the aftermarket even if i had a stock fly but what about b/w a 12 pounder??? If nobody understands my question then ill rephrase.... what is the main difference, other than holding capacity, when using a the aftermarket clutch on a 12 pounder? If i were to use a stock clutch on a 12 pounder everything would be the same other than faster revs right?

Re: Light Flywheel on Stock Clutch?

it puts a more wear/stress on your clutch essentialy..the fly will allow you to rev much faster and therfore you will be shifting harder, wich in return puts a harder engaugment on the clutch.. Your going to loose your enertia with the lighter flywheel everytime you engauge the clutch, so your going to want a clutch that can grab and hook up hard at a higher rpm...basically if your not driving it hard at all then no you dont have to have a upgraded clutch..but in that case you dont need a 12lb flywheel either. its like a turbo without an intercooler..yes it will work..but why, when you can have both and have a much more efficient set-up. follow ? in the end its up to you, im just tryin to make you see the realism of it

Re: Light Flywheel on Stock Clutch?

aaaa i getchya. That turbo/intercooler metaphor was good. You will get performance but not really at its optimal level. But i was thinking my engine doesnt rev very high so having a upgraded clutch wouldnt be very much of a factor... but i dunno... thats what i was asking all these ?s on the forums... thanx man!

actually what i really wanted from a 12 pounder was to improve throttle response and maybe bump up my entire power band. Since it is a lightweight fly, wouldnt it improve the entire power band a lil bit like in supercharger cases... w/o that big of a gain?

Re: Light Flywheel on Stock Clutch?

well the light fly gets your revs up higher..essentialy getting more power faster, but not thru the entire band..only at the top end due to the high revs..a heavier fly is better for keeping your low end...but a light fly doesnt hold power because it looses its enertia apon applying the clutch, so when you apply your clutch you loose the power...this is a huge factor with us with super and turbo chargers like you said..we loose our boost as soon as we apply..thats where a good clutch comes into play to help with hooking up to keep it at its most minimal
