Le mans winners

Seem I read a post here some time ago that some one was trying to build the winning car from Le Mans for every year since he was born. I can't find the thread,but it is a pretty neat idea. I would be interested to know how that project is going. I may try thgis myself. I already have 2 winners now.............

I know for a fact that the only way to do that without intense scratchbuilding is to go 1:43rd scale. Cars like the Pescarolo Matras aren't (as far as I know) common in 1:24th scale kits.

Some cars are easier to get a hold of as plastic and resin kits. Here's what I know off the top of my head.

Fisher Model Works and Pattern (god I love that company) has a beautiful curbside Jaguar D Type.

Fujimi has good Ford GT40 MkII's and a good Porsche 917. IMC did a MkII that was really much more of a MkI with some MkII details, but it's a great full detail kit with opening doors and decklid that was reissued by Union.

The GT40 MkIV is available from Le Mans Miniatures and there was a good full detail kit from MPC. Also IMC had a decent full detail MkIV that was reissued under the Testors name.

Monogram has an old curbside kit (that did double duty as a slot car body in the 60's) of a Ferrari 275P.

Mini Exotics has a curbside Aston Martin DBR-1.

There are many Ferrari 250TR's in resin, none in plastic. These range from pretty curbsides (I believe Le Mans Miniatures) to Model Factory Hiro's majestic (and pricy) full detail offerings.

Naturally, Tamiya is the go to for GTP/Group C cars. Mazda 787-B's, Mercedes-Saubers, Jaguar XJR-9's, and Porsche 956/962's are all to be found under the Tamiya banner.

WSC era cars are not available in plastic. End of story there. But resin examples of the Audi R8R's, Ferrari 333SP's, BMW LMP12's, Peugeot Courages, Kremer-Porsche, and Bentley Speed 8's are all available from a multitude of sources.

The GT1 cars are plentiful in scale, save for the dominant McLaren F1 LM. Studio 27 and Le Mans Miniatures have the car in resin. Porsche 911GT1's (save for the '98 Evos) came from three different plastic kit companies: Revell/Dragon and UT Models did excellent GT1 Evos, and Tamiya did an excellent GT1.

I'm sure I've left out some resin companies in listing that, and I haven't even touched the pre-war stuff, but that's what I know from off the top of my head.

By the way, wouldn't the missus become extremely unhappy if you started collecting more expensive garage kits after purchasing that monstrous Scale Motorsport Porsche? After all, you're looking at one hellaciously expensive series of build ups if you try that.

If I did it starting the year I was born ('67) I think it could eventually be done. It would not be a small project, it would probably be many years in the making. 'course then there is all the future winners. LOL

Just to add to your nightmare, and speaking from memory:
Profil 24 has resins of the Peugeot 905´s and McLaren F1 GTR.
Heller also has a Peugeot 905.
Wyer GT40´s are available from Fujimi (68/69) and Le Mans Miniatures (only the 69).
917K, so rare a few years ago, are everywhere: Fujimi, Le Mans Miniatures, Profil 24.
Porsche 936/76: Renaissance and Scale Designs.
Porsche 936/77: Tamiya
Porsche 936/81: Tamiya´s 936/78 with Studio27 or Scale Designs Decals.
Alpine A-442B: Tamiya
Rondeau M379: Le Mans Miniatures
Porsche 935 K3: Scale Coachworks, you´ll have to find suitable decals
Matra 670B (73): Fisher

The Matra 670 from 72, a short tail, doesn´t exist to my knowledge, the same with the 670C from 74 and the Gulf GR8 from 75.
