Question stock differential vs. eaton differential

I have been looking for a good differential to put in my 99 2wd 5.3 silverado (new body style). I absolutely hate spinning for a long time off the line. Eaton seems to be about the best one that I have found but it is a little pricey. Would it be just as good to replace my (Stock) 3.42 limited slip rear end with a (Stock) 3.73 posi rear end? or would the best thing be to just go with the eaton posi and some 3.73s? Can anyone give my some good differences between stock posi differentials and eaton posi differentials?

Stock posi is ok, but the more upgrades you plan on doing, the worse the stock one will perform. My stock posi has a tendency to want to spin one wheel at certain times. The eaton will absolutely hook up every time without any questions. Since you're going to go ahead and do it, get the eaton and you won't regret it.

Hey Slowprocess,
I see that your truck has a lot of mods. It must be pushing a lot of horsepower. I was wondering....how do you keep your truck from spinnin off the line. Mine is a 5.3L 2wd and I only have a hypertech programmer but my truck wont stop spinnin when you punch it off the line. What would you suggest I do? Maybe some 3.73's? Idk...Im just tired of people beating me off the line!

I wish I could hook it off the line! I always play catch up out of the hole. I am in the process of installing some nitto street slicks on my stock wheels. They would definately help us hook up out of the hole. Caltrac also makes some really nice traction bars for our trucks that help out a ton. I usually just feather it out of the hole, but I still spin pretty bad. If I brake stall anywhere over 1500 rpms its just a huge smokefest when I launch. But from a 10mph roll, the truck is just nasty. So my suggestion is do what I'm gonna do and invest in some base model wheels and drag radials. You'll never get beat out of the hole again.

Oh, yeah and the eaton posi would help with the spinning a great deal too. The 3.73s would just make it worse with the stock posi. Make that one of the last mods.

Ill look into the traction bars. I have 3.42's and I guess they are good for now. I just put some toyo proxes s/t on my truck and they did pretty good. I was wondering though....do you think the traction bars would make my truck ride rough?

I don't think it will ride that much differently. Calvertracing makes the best ones for our truck. They're pretty expensive, but well worth the money. They will run you a little under $300.
