guage cluster question
I have a 1992 Chevrolet full size truck, 4 wheel drive, 350, automatic transmission. My truck has the cluster without a tach and the temp. guage doesn't work. I know in order to fix this I have to have my cluster sent off at a GM dealer and the cost is pretty high. What I'm wanting to know is if I had a cluster that had a tach that came from a 92-94 truck, then would it work in my truck? I really don't want to spend about $300 to get mine fixed if I can just get a new cluster that has the tach. Thanks for any replies.

It should work fine. To make the tach work you will have to wire it up though. Not sure about the wiring for it. It should be fairly simple though.

Re: guage cluster question
Well, the cluster just plugs into the dash. I kinda figured that maybe the truck is already wired for a tach, and the pin that controls the tack would just be left out of where my cluster plugs in. That was my idea, I just need somebody to confirm that. But thanks for the reply.

Re: guage cluster question
i'm thinking that since your cluster didn't have a tach to begin with, it won't be any wires or pin there. To my knowledge a tach has a wire coming from it that leads thru the fire wall and to the engine. Far as your temp. gauge not working, it just could be the temp. sending unit that needs to be replaced..

Well that sucks. I was hoping that a cluster with a tach would just plug up and the computer would recognize it and it would work. Oh well, probably could'nt buy a brand new cluster anyways. As for the temp. guage, I know it has to be the cluster, becuase I changed the sending unit and it still fluctauted, but not as bad. It would go from just below 210 (normal) to the mark in between 210 and 260. I changed the water pump, changed the sending unit, and the thermostat before I found out it was the guage. Got a manual temp gauge in it right now and it never goes above 190, but if I hook the sending unit up, then like I said before, the guage goes from normal range to about 240. Thats why I just wanted to get a cluster with a tach, but sounds like that is gonna be more trouble then its worth.

Re: guage cluster question
If you get a new cluster, who ever has to put it in will have to take out the whole panel. Once that is exposed it probably wouldn't hurt to put in a tach at this point since the cluster/panel is removed. If you want a more sportier look, you can always mount a tach pod.
