They are a bugger to get off but they will come off.
You are best having someone help you do this ... although it can be accomplished by one person.
You first have to remove the clip that is around the end of the cage where the shaft comes through. If you look at it close (after removing it) you will see that the end has some little tabs that actually grip the end of the shaft. You will need to have someone hold the cage so the motor is hanging down and will fall to the bench when you do this. Get youself a punch that is smaller then the diameter of the shaft coming through the cage. While the other person is holding it .. WHACK it hard to drive the shaft downward. Tell your helper to try to hold it as steady as they can. Keep WACKING it until you see the cage begin to move. You are now getting past the tabs that I spoke of earlier. Once you get it started it will not take much punching to get it off the cage. Turn it over and do the same to the other end.
