Performance upgrades for ae82

Hi guys

I own a 1986 ae82 (FWD), with a stock 4AC in it. At the moment it understeers terribly, and im affraid that with a more powerful engine (possibly a 4agze or 4age, maybe 4age to become a turbocharged 4age) that the handling would just get worse.

MY question is, would i be able to overcome this handling problem with tire and suspension upgrades, or do you think that it is a problem caused more by the weight balance in the car, or the fact that the car was simply never meant to be a performance vehicle in the first place.

This whole thing is cause im trying to decide wheather the modify this car, or buy something else....and i dont really wanna buy a new car :P

oh, its a sedan too

Buy a AE82 twin cam.

To fix the handling, start with the stock strut brace out of a twinky and some stiffer springs. You can then add sway bars, revalved shocks and some sticky rubber.

To solve your performance problems, slot in a 20V (my preference). I have a 4AGE out of a 92 SX fully rebuilt to race specs (shaved head, port and polish, TRD racing camshafts, advanced ignition timing, 4-2-1 extractors, CAI, 2.5" pipes, high flow cat, 3" muffler) and it kills a 20V, but I would recommend going for a 20V to start with.

How much do you estimate all that has cost you? Ive sorta been tossing up between buying an old RX7 maybe a 1984 model, and using my corolla for everday driving.....but corollas have kinda grown on me :P

Re: Performance upgrades for ae82

one more question, you said "buy a ae82 twin cam" why is this....if im planning on an engine conversion to a 20v or 4agze why would it matter if it was a twin or single cam ae82?

Because of the suspension and brake setup. You'll also nee dto move the transmission tunnel if you get a 4AC. As well as converting to EFi. Much cheaper just to buy a twinky.

Howdy Oz

I own a '88 AE82 twin cam, great little car since new, no problems ever.

I am now looking to make it somewhat quicker, have a very good condition Mitsi TD04L turbo from my '00 rex on hand and was thinking of transplanting a 4AGZE into the AE82 and pulling the turbo off the shelf...

Obviously lots of work on manifolds and plumbing, what thoughts/advice or otherwise do you have on this project?

Kind regards,

Steve

Re: Performance upgrades for ae82

To the GTE motor. Use a decent intercooler and upgrade the brakes

This may sound stupid but other than that tasty pastry with the creamy center what is a Twinky?
I have a 92 corolla and it really could use some stiffer suspension.

yeh what the hell is a twinky?? why cant u just call it a normal name like "a-strut-brace" or whatever the make of the strut brace is. Why a twinky?? becuz i do belive that u cant fit a cream filled pastry onto a Corolla.
