Should I get a golf????

Here's the deal, I need a car for commuting. I HATE the way all compacts look except the Golf/Beetle. Only have about $10K to spend.

I DO NOT want to buy a ricer(civic/accord/camry).....but money is tight and the truth be told, dependability is a BIG plus right now.

Are these things worth it? How long can I expect it to last? 100k...150K What is upkeep on these things?

I really dont want to get a ricer.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Should I get a golf????

the motors will run forever. the fit and finish is better than honda. they get a bad rap due to problems with coilpacks and window regulators. but theyre great cars. i went veedub when my civic was stolen and havent looked back

If you don't mind occasional annoyances like insignificant CELs or broken knobs, there shouldn't be anything to complain about. I've had to replace some plastic pieces on my 99 Passat and 95 (previous) and 96 (current) Golfs that broke from wear/carelessness, but other than that they have been true rock solid German engineering. Parts can be a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. They aren't as quick as the Japanese products, but the readily available Neuspeed products, particularly the supercharger can solve that in a flash, or boost to be more precise. What really differentiates the German/Jap cars is the solid structure of the VW which will pay dividends in ride quality/feel and reliability. My Golf has 120k miles and the original clutch is just now showing signs of wear. I will be disappointed if I don't get 250k miles before the car needs serious attention. And it feels like a tank whether at 30 or 120 MPH. Plus my 4 door hatch has LOADS of room (get a 4 door). Overall I think the Golf is the wisest choice.

Re: Should I get a golf????

I had a jetta all throughout high school and i gave it hell.. it was tank, never left me stranded on a road, and i bought it when it had 100,000 miles. VW cant go wrong.

I know this response is a little off-time, but still, for whaterver and whoever is worth it, just want to drop my 2 cents and favor your decission over to get Golf, the fate of whoever is or has been a lucky owner of a Golf is to change our current one for another Golf.

You won't be disapointed.
