Wheel bearing replacement $$

Don't know if this has a straightforward answer but figured I'd give it a shot. I'm taking my car (99 GA) into dealership tommorrow. I'm pretty sure my wheel bearing needs to be replaced. Shimmy's during turns, has been getting worse lately. Started to notice after hitting a pothole. If it is that does anyone know how much it costs approximately to replace a wheel bearing? Is it worth it to shop around since it almost always cost a lot more to fix something at a dealership.

Thanks

Are you sure its a bearring? Could be a warped rotor rubbing against your brake pads and if its that , id suggest you fix it asap cus it may be salvageable on the rotor lathe and saves what pads you have left.

I work for a general motors dealership. A tipical wheel bearing replacement with a gm part is around $500 dollars a wheel bearing, give or take.

You didnt have warranty left? Ouch. After reading some of these posts long time ago on my freinds account I got nervous and bought extended bumper to bumper 160,000 mile warranty for 2000 bucks and Ive only had 800 dollars of a return from it in 2 years so now Im wondering if it was worth it.

Is your warranty up yet? If not don't worry, if it is close to being up take it in and have them check out the car bumper to bumper and see whats wrong with the car.

One trans or engine problem can cost more than 2000 dollars, its better to have an extended warranty and not have to woory then worrying on how you will pay for the repair when it breaks!

I had to have both my front hubs replaced after only 120,000 kilometers on my 99 piece of crap. GM of course made sure that you can't just replace the bearings! The entire hub assembly needs to go, including the ABS sensor.

I had the first one done at a dealer for 600 dollars. The other I had done at an independant shop for 400 dollars. Less then 8 months later, the GM part replaced by the dealer failed again... not the bearing mind you but the ABS sensor!!

Do not give GM any money at all. Go to a car parts store and buy yourself a new hub assembly. Then take the part to a small trust-worthy garage and have them install it. Or if you have the ability, do the job yourself. It is not that complicated as long as you have the tools and patience and you can refrain from beating the hell out of the car with a torque-wrench for costing you yet more money.
