I need Help

TRANSMISSIONS

In 1972, I know the LS-5 454 had the Rockcrusher, and all the other V8's were offered with 3 and 4 speed manuals, the Hydra-Matic and the Powerglide. My car has an L-65 with an automatic, so it's either the Hydra-Matic or the Powerglide. I don't know which, because we haven't started restoring it yet.

What I need to know is, how many gears did these two transmissions have? What were the ratios on them? Did they have overdrive? If anyone knows ANY of this, please let me know. Thanks alot.

Re: I need Help

I believe the Powerglides were either 1.94 or 1.76 first gear, and 1-to-1 second gear...it was only a 2-speed transmission. You most likely will have a Turbo 400 transmission if it's an automatic, unless someone swapped in something else. Turbo 350's were relegated to smallblocks. I know the Turbo 350 had a higher number (lower gear) first gear, compared to the Turbo 400, but they both had 1-to-1 final drive 3rd gear (no overdrive). These two transmissions were 3-speeds. I'll have to "dig up" my books to get the ratios for you...unless someone else can come up with it before me.

Oops sorry . I didn't realize you had a 350 engine. Most likely you'll have a Turbo 350 transmission. The easiest way to tell is to look at the trans oil pan. It should be square, with one corner "chopped off". If it's shaped kinda like the "State of Texas", it's a Turbo 400.
