Auto Maker Tries to Avoid Compliance with Fuel Economy Regulations
Nissan "is asking the federal government for relief from the nation's fuel-economy rules..." Although the wisdom of current CAFE regulations and CAFE reform proposals is under serious debate, one issue which should not be subject to discussion is that all companies have to adhere to the same rules. There is no environmental or economic benefit to allowing one company to gain a competitive advantage by not adhering to the same rules which which their competitors comply.

I agree that they should have to comply, those rules were not put in place so automakers could choose whether or not they wanted to follow them. But at the same time, I can also use this as an example of how dumb NAFTA is.
