My 94 pathfinder stalls after a cold start when i put it in gear. It only happens in cold weather (less than 40 degrees). When i put it in reverse or drive the car jerks and stalls. After waiting a few minutes for the car to warm up its fine. I had the fuel injectors cleaned, new transmition, new torque converter and its still not fixed.
Also, when I am able to drive the car when its cold, it seems like its stuck in third gear and it cant switch to first so when i come to a stop of course it stalls. Even when i put it in first it still doesnt switch to it. In addition, when i rev the engine when its cold, the rev isnt smooth, it shakes the whole car until it gets to 4,000 I hope this description fits exactly what is wrong with my car. |

Did you find the problem regarding the transmision sticking on third when cold? I am experiencing this as a random problem. When it sticks I need to shift it to Neutral and then back to drive. I am thinking it could be a defective transmission to engine valve/sensor.

engine to transmission valve sensor?
I have a 95 pathinder with a problem, and I'm curious if this valve sensor could be the cause of my problems. I'll describe:
In the low foward gears (or perhaps just first) there is a subtle chatter sound, as if not fully engaged. And when moving there also is a strong grind as if wheels scraping, but when the car upshifts this noise goes away. Additionally, when in Park, Neutral, Reverse, the same chatter noise, as if not fully engaged, or perhaps not properly released from another gear, is striking. These noises are consistent since they started. Sometime when just starting up and putting in gear, D or R, the car stalls unless I quickly hit the gas to make the car move, while eleviates the danger of stalling. Any help is appreciated. |

Chatter is not good! I have been looking further for why my Pathfinder changes gears in the morining from 1st to second and inmediately to third and then it does not downshift to 1st when I stop at a light. I have done more research and I am almost certain that it will be the Valve Body inside the transmission (perhaps a sticking valve at cold temperatures). I have never taken this part off but I don't know where to buy the part or if I can service it myself. The part at the dealer should run about $1000. My transimssion has 130K miles. A new rebuilt transmission is about $1900-$2000 delivered to my door.
Any one has any more insight?

Re: 1994 Nissan Pathfinder stall problem
The problem might also be worn tranny bands. I had a similar problem, the tranny wouldn't shift out of gear unless i really revved the hell out of the engine. I took it to a local shop and they replaced bands and a few bearings and now it shifts beautifully. Dunno, just a suggestion.
