94 Cavalier Stereo Install

Okay, i just got my 94 cavi and it has no original factory stereo. So ive been going without a radio for a few weeks and i just bought one. I bought a pair of speakers to go on the back shelf and a new headunit.
Im wondering if anyone can guide me through the process of installing this headunit, since my car has never had a stereo in it this raises a few questions on my part. Does it have all the right wires just sitting in that empty space or will i have to run some? Also, so far the only info on installing this thing has been a website which showed me how to open up the dash to put it in, from there i have no idea where to go. I know i have a 2 DIN slot, and thats about it. Has anyone been through something similar or can shed light on my problem? Thanks in advance

Re: 94 Cavalier Stereo Install

you have everything you need, except for the dash adapter to hold the radio. The space is too big for the aftermarket radio right? Therefore you have to go to a place that handles car audio and buy an adapter so the aftermarket radio will fit. You will also need an antenna adapter so that the factory antenna will plug into your aftermarket radio. If you want to make it simple you can also pick up a wire harness adapter, which will plug into the factory harness. Also if you aren't hooking up crossovers or an amplifier there is no need to run anymore wires. However if you wish to not invest in the wire harness here are the colours.
Ignition Input- Yellow
Batttery power input- Orange
Ground- black
Dim signal- Brown (may or may not be used)
Gray- panel light ( DO NOT USE)
Left Front speaker+ - Gray
........................- - tan
Right front speaker+ - Dark green
.........................- - Light green
Right rear speaker+ - Light Blue
........................- - Dark blue
Left Rear speaker+ - Yellow
.......................- - brown

These are colours to the best of my reccollection. The speaker wires will be separate from the power wires but nonetheless test them before hookup. Also for your rear speakers just tap into the factory rear speaker connector wires. they will be the same colour and polarity as above. Just make sure they are connected properly, otherwise your spekers will be out of phase. Good luck!

Re: 94 Cavalier Stereo Install

So you think that all the right wires will be sitting in the spot even though the car never had a stereo in it, i have to put in an antenna too but i think i found a good site that has a diagram. thanks for all the info.
2 more things though, since im buying a new antenna, will i still need that antenna adapter or does that depend on the antenna.
And finally, you were talking about factory rear speaker connector wires, i never had factory speakers at all, so i bought some 350watt 4x6's to put in that spot, im guessing i have to run my own speaker wire right?
Thanks for all the help hopeless.
