My head unit has me stumped

My speakers don't have any sound coming out of them at all....I'm stumped. Please Help!


Ok, so here's the story. My speakers got stolen, so I bought some new speakers. I didn't install them right away so the bare wires hung out in the doors for about a week. The faceplate was off the head unit tho. So I put the new speakers in and they work fine, for a day. They next day, they quit (no sound) after 1 min of the car running. The head unit is still on, and all speakers are off. So i think it must be the 8 ohm speakers i have in the rear, so i disconnect those. No luck. So then i just leave the faceplate off for a week or so. Then i try the faceplate again, and it works, for 2-3 days. Then all of a sudden (while driving on a bumpy road, it quits on me. No sound from any speakers. When i turn the head unit on, the front left speaker makes a pop sound. That's it.

I have a pioneer deh-p4500mp head unit.

look at the wires all the was from the speakers to the CD because they probably just riped them out and could of pulled some weirs lose.

maby just run all new weirs from the CD to the speakers.

if that is not it take the speakers back and git new ones.

I highly doubt this is a speaker wiring issue, because all speakers quit at the same time. It seems as if somethign is wrong with the HU amp...

checking your you speaker wire sounds like a good idea to me. Assuming you are using the orignal factory speaker wire. for the simple fact that often times car companys put in very low powered head units (we are talk like 30 x 4 sometimes less) so the put in a amp. which is pretty useless it just makes up for the power the head unit doesn't have. But when the put this amp in the car it turns the speak wire into a big curcit and if you break the curcit say a shorted wire from ripped out speakers the amp will turn off. thios means none of your speakers will get signals.

but you could be right it. it could very possibly be the head unit. a easy way to find out (if you are familar with installing cd player) is to take you cd player out of the dash and unhook your speaker wires from the wiring harness leaving the rest conected buy a lil bit of speaker and connect you speakers directly to you head unit avoiding the factory wire. If your unfamilar with installing a cd player and the wiring harness part of it then i believe you would be better off going to best buy or some audio store and have them test it. if you need more details about this just e-mail me at [email protected] and i'll do my best to explain .. When it does play, do all 4 speakers play fine, or are some of them quiet or distorted? One of the speakers could have a blown voice coil, making it have far less resistance than the others, which could cause the headunit to overheat and shutoff. Do you have a multimeter? It would make troubleshooting much easier.

OK, I was driving today and at first it worked fine for 5 min or so, then i hit a pothole and it shut off. I stopped the car for a few min (engine off) and then returned. On my way home, the stereo started working again.

Now, I was thinking, ok this seems like its a loose wire. So I reached behind the HU and wiggled the wires while its playing, and there was no interruption in the sound.

Also, all 4 spakers work as they are supposed to without distortion or abnormally low volume. I have the rear speakers disconnected because they are 8 ohms and i thought they were causing the problem. The connectors for the rear speakers are insulated, so they shouldn't be shorting out anything.

I have'nt had time to check the speaker wiring itself, that's what i want to try to avoid. And, since i have quick-connect blade-type connectors on all my speakers (not soldered) I doubt that the theif had to use extraorinary force that damaged wiring.
