im rebuilding my engine

so far ive gotten no help from this forum. i bought an 87 non turbo rx7. its burning coolant so im rebuilding it. i drove it for about a half hour smoking like ason of a bitch, then it stopped smoking. im rebuilding it according to the haynes manual to find the seal that blew. does anybody know what seal that may be? id like to get a rebuild kit for the car but no one seems to have one or know a place where i can find one. i bought a gasket set from nippon and a new thermostat. does anybody know of any other things other than the clutch that i should replace? this is my first rebuild, my first project car. i can invest $5000 to the project. this is my last shot at faith for this forum. if i get no responses i wont be surprised.

Re: im rebuilding my engine

You can get a rebuild kit from www.racingbeat.com and if you are redoing the clutch redo the pilot bearing while your there. There is also a good rebuilding video available. I will post the name later when I get back to my own computer.

Re: im rebuilding my engine

There are all kinds of parts that might need replacing. Belts,hoses,plugs,wires. While you are in there throw new tranny seal in. Motor mounts can be cheap. Fuel and air filter. Don't forget to get flywheel surfaced. Pilot bushing/bearing should be replaced while you are there. HAve fun rebuilding.

Find a guy by the name of Kevin Landers; he'll know everything.

When they say the seal, they mean coolant seal, its leaking into your housing causing it to smoke;

but when you're replacing the coolant seals, you might as well rebuild the whole thing; replacing the apex seals so you will have a fresh new engine ready to go!

ok guys, i got the engine out and the intake and exust manifolds taken off. taking the nut off the shaft was hell. my book said it was on tight, but man. i had to go rent an 3/4 in impact gun to get it off. i havent gotten into the engine yet, but everything is off and ready to go. there is a new clutch in it to! wish me luck. i went out and got that pilot bearing and seal and i got a fuel pump today.

It's one of three things:

- A blown inner water jacket o-ring (these were orange-coloured from the factory and of the two o-rings on each iron housing facing this one is the inner
- Corrosion and failure of the inner water jacket o-ring land at the bottom of the front iron housing
- Warpage of one or both rotor housings out of spec causing blowby

What's the history on the engine? Before rebuilding it, you need to make _absolutely sure_ the rotor housings are not warped and out of spec. The history of the engine will help quite a bit in determining this without having to find a 2-3" micrometer to measure the widths of the aluminum in several places just underneath the steel lining in each housing.

Re: im rebuilding my engine

i bought a dial indicator and micrometer and im going to check that out thanks, and ite was the bigseal, the inner seal was all messed up on the front housing, and there is rust and corrosion where the seal was, especially on the inside toward the rotors. it ate away the metal and it doesent look good. i hope my new seals will work, maybe i can put some liquid gasket in the corroded parts. i think i may be done for. is this as bad as i imagine?

It sounds like a portion of the o-ring land itself corroded and flew away. If there's no land for the o-ring to seat, then the second there's any combustion chamber force, it will blow it right out again and re-create the same problem. This front plate needs to be replaced. You can find 'em used all over the place.. Series 4 and 5 are the same. Try Kevin Landers at http://www.rotaryresurrection.com and see if he has any.
