1992 Ford Ranger backfiring

Just bought a Ranger and noticed after we drove it about a hundred miles on the freeway it started backfiring (the noise sounds like it is coming from underneath the hood or floor board) when we got off the exit. I wasn't sure if it was the car in front with bass music booming or the truck. After we pulled off the exit it stopped. It didn't do it again for 600 miles or so but suddenly started again at an exit. It backfired longer this time and continued while we were driving but slowly quieted down. I noticed that the speed didn't matter. When I stopped to check it out, it quit before I could figure it out. It has now started to continue backfiring after you shut the engine off. I'm replacing the spark plugs and I checked the spark plug wires for resistance. They range from 5.6k to 8.6k. Any suggestions?

backfire

I was wondering if you ever got the problem resolved? My 94 Ranger is doing the exact same thing. They've changed the camshaft position sensor, the crankshaft position sensor, fuel filter, mass air flow sensor, and now want to replace the entire computer. Any help you might have or successful repair advice is much appreciated.
