92 to 90 axod transmission differences?
Hi all, I've got a 92 with a bad axod metric transmission, I'v also got a good 90 model axod transmission that I'd like to put in this car. The problem so far is that the 92 has a couple of extra electrical connectors than the 90. Anybody know what these are, and if it will work anyway? Thanks in advance

Re: 92 to 90 axod transmission differences?
The '92 transmission is fully electronic shifting. If you put that in your 1990 car it
**will only have 3rd and Rev** As the '86-'90 units are non-electronic. Last edited by RexNfx400; 03-09-2004 at 11:36 PM. |

Thanks for the info, it sounds like it just might work, assuming everything bolts up ok

It WILL NOT work Unless you swap out the whole engine waring harness and the computer 86-90 are identical 91- up are not even remotely the same. You will also have to change the Upper intake manifold or custonize the one you have to accomedate the new kickdown cable you gonna have to install also. Dont try it try trading something in a junkyard or something IMO dont try anyhting used in a taurus It is very difficult to change these trannys and if you install it and it dont work a lot of wasted time. not to mention the 91-up tranny have a lot more chance of being bad from the get go up to you though this is my 2 cents

Gosh, I missed checking for the tv cable. What goes wrong with this transmission that most of them are bad?

How would you desribe the operation of the tranny in the car?
1. Neutrals at stop? 2. No forward or reverse after getting off freeway? 3. Locked up, can't even push? 4. Slips on turns? 5. Jerks and bucks? 6. Leaks out front? Or maybe a better description? |

I've had a couple of these, and they both simply won't move, as if they had no fluid in them, however they're full. one would try to move a few feet, slipping really bad, this one don't even try.

Re: 92 to 90 axod transmission differences?
If you unplug the electrical connector at top of trans and it moves forward then planetary gears are no good. If still no move then maybe take pressure test, pressure ok then could be converter.

I need to replace the tranny in my 91 Sable. I found one in a 91 Taurus at the wreckers with clean oil. I called up a friend at the garage and he said that they are virtually the same under the hood. After getting a good look at both trannys, well as good a look I could get with both trannys still attached to the car, they look exactly the same right down to the connectors. Is there anything else I should check for before yanking out the transmission?

I do not know how to identify the sproket ratios other than pulling the chain cover and doing a tooth count. You might be able to use the ECM out of the taurus, but thats getting a little out of hand I think. |

I yanked the tranny from the taurus and after a few cuts, bruises and broken knuckles (thankfully no broken bolts) a friend and I hoisted it into my sable. It's running just as well as it did before the original tranny went haywire. The only thing I noticed that seems different is the shift from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st seems a little more noticable then any other shift. Is this normal in a high mileage tranny, or is it something that should be checked out?
