My cd player reeds NO MAGAZINE or CD ERROR when I try to play a CD. I have a 2000 Jetta Vr6 with moonsoon system. There is no cd changer connected. Can someone please help to figure out how to fix the problem??

Re: CD player problems

Was there a remote CD changer at some time? The radio has to be coded with a scan tool to look for a CD changer if one was installed. It is a little confusing why a radio w/internal CD would look for a remote changer magazine as I don't believe that was an option. Either way you will probably need to go to VW or find someone with a VAG-COM simulator to check out the radio's programming.

cd player

I bought the car used and will admit i do not know much about the radio system. There is the option to toggle between cd player and cd changer but I don't think there is a cd changer in the car. I have never used it. The light shows cd player but still says either check magazine or no magazine or cd error. It used to work fine until one day it stopped.

Re: CD player problems

CD changer would be in the trunk. If it doesn't have one keep it toggled to CD player. Since you've probably already done that I'd say there's an internal problem w/the unit. I've head of this problem a few times, but never heard of a fix. It's probably worth a trip to the dealer to have them scan it.

Same Problem

I had the exact same thing happen last week to my 2000 Jetta w/ Monsoon system. I don't have a changer either and it keeps kicking out my discs, do you know how to reset the stereo without taking it to the dealer?

Re: CD player problems

I have to jump on the bandwagon too. I have a 2001 Jetta VR6 with the same Monsoon CD player as described above. I am the original owner and it has never had a cd changer.

I hope someone can solve this problem with the error message. I get the same thing, when you insert a disk, it says "CK Magazine" then "CD1 CD Error"

As for the dealer, they just want to replace the radio or have you go and get a new aftermarket. Either is a big bucks solution to what seems to be a simplier problem.

Thanks for the help!

Re: CD player problems

You can try disconnecting the car's battery to reset the radio. Be careful though, on some models (mainly VR6's) you have to make the ECM relearn it throttle valve positions using a VAG scanner. Also make sure you have the radio SAFE code, depending on model it may or may not ask for it since it's still in the same car. An alternative would be to pull both radio fuses, but one of the fuses can be hard to find).

Boschman, that was the first thing i thought of as well and did this. The Cd player worked for a week and then the same message came back up. Unplugged battery again and we'll see how long this lasts. Am I not letting it uncharge long enough (3 hours)? It remembers my presets, so wondering. Also, maybe I can unplug ECM?? Thanks for your help

Re: CD player problems

tim rose, I assume your's isn't a VR6 as you didn't have problems with restarting. The radio will remember presets & the ECM will remember the radio even when disconnectd (that's why it dosen't go to safe mode). Be carefull with disconnecting the battery too much as it can cause strange things to happen. Lots of people get this error, when read with a scanner the code usually comes out CD inserted upside down. I have not seen a true fix for it, although some have suggested cleaning the laser optics.

hey Boschmann,

Works ok for now, don't want to have to pay dealer $100 to reset the thing, seems like should be an easier fix. Do you think we should all get aftermarket stereos? If the dealer can't fix it, not sure what the next step is here. suggestions? Thanks Bosch

I would try something like these:
