2000 Grand Am Not Getting Gas- HELP!

i have a 2000 Grand AM SE 2 Dr. Coupe. When im driving at speeds over 50 mph the car will stop getting gas and if i dont pull over immediately, it will cut off. i can drive it under 50 mph with no problems. its been doing this since mid Jan. its been in 3 different shops. the diagnotics say nothings wrong. theyve replaced my fuel filter. theyve started me on using gas antifreeze (?) in case theres water in the lines. the lower the gas level gets the lower the speed i can go without it turning off gets. its still doing this. any ideas? everyones telling me that they cant find anything.

Sort of sounds like the speed limiter is kicking in, did anybody check to see where it's set??

Re: Re: 2000 Grand Am Not Getting Gas- HELP!

hey i'm havin a similar problem too, i'm a mechanic and can't figure it out. i've noticed that moisture in the air and a slightly higher engine temperature, and regular gas all have effects on this. i find i stall alot less with a full tank of premium. i replaced my spark plugs and that made a huge difference for a while, but the plugs are fouling already. i'm gonna change the filter cause it's due a long time ago anyway. i've heard complaints about the pump and fuel distributer. as a mechanic and havin mechanic friends, i think mechanics have the crappiest runnin cars on the road, but they can keep em runnin. i put either octane boost and injector cleaner or fuel sytsem treatment in on a full tank of 93 octane and it'll run fine as long as i keep it filled up as much as possible but if i try to play games just to see how far down i'll let the tank run before it starts to do this to me again, i'll hit a quarter tank to an eighth before i start stalling and playing a cooldown and wait to drive a couple of blocks game till i hit a gas staion. see if you notice the same problems and get back to me if you've fixd it. oh the other problem i heard about causing this is the tcc sensor for your torque converter.

Re: 2000 Grand Am Not Getting Gas- HELP!

To me it sounds like a fuel pump getting hot. The pump uses the gas to cool and lube itself. Low on gas may get the pump hotter where it starts to bind in the housing. I have replace many fuel pump modules for cranks no start or stalling.

Most Techs will not guess on this complaint due to the cost of a pump. I know I wouldn't want to pump a pump in a car unless I was 100% sure it would fix it.

Re: 2000 Grand Am Not Getting Gas- HELP!

Well I have the same problem on my 200 gran am and have replaced the plugs the filter and even the coil packs on advice from a tecnician. Nothing works. Is there an internal filter in the gas tank that could be getting clogged?

I have a 2000 Grand Am SE, Automatic, 2.4. I was having kind of the same problem with my car. It would spontaneously act like it wasn't getting enough gas. Sometimes it would buck, and eventually it would stall out. If I was lucky I would pull off to the side of the road before it would stall out on me. After waiting about 5 minutes or so, the car would start and i could take off again, but the same thing would happen a few minutes later. I tried putting different gas in the car, but it didn't always work. I had someone look at the car and it ended up being the catalytic converter. I was told that it was plugged which would "cut off the air flow". Hope this helps. I haven't had any problems with it since then.
