Hi Folks, just found this board and it looks very helpful. We are picking up our 2001 Aurora on Monday. This is the first Olds I have ever owned.The car is all black with saddle colored leather and every option Aurora had. 4.0 liter package. Did a lot of wheeling and dealing and got them to sell it to me out the door for 15,500. 44,000 on the odometer. Sound like a decent deal or not? Could of gotten a Gran Marquis, 2003, LSE with 3 years left on the factory warranty and half the milage for 600 more, but fell in love with the Aurora the minute "she who must be obeyed" saw it. Even though the dealer is only giving us 3 months or 3,000 mile warranty, we HAVE to have this car. No, we DESERVE to have this car. Any comments on our choice? Think we went the right way? All the research and reveiws I found on the Internet seems to point out that this is a good choice of vehicle. Haven't seen any real bad reviews of any consequence. Thanks for any input.

Buy an extended warranty. Radiators and A/C compressors start to fail at 50k mi. The $1500 or so sounds like a lot now, but two trips to the dealer and it's paid for itself. And you WILL be going to the dealer.

That is the same as the car I bought new for 37,900 in 97, I wish you alot of luck with yours, I have had a few minor problems, maybe not so minor, my alternator went out on me, the air is not working now, I had to have all the brakes and rotors replaced ($400) I am having locking problems with it now, other than that I love the car, by the way mine only has 43,900 miles on it.

Indy, I frequent many boards and haven't seen the same problems on the new Aurora as the Classic. Remember that they are two different cars (the new one on an updated G-body - originally was to be an 88 replacement, but GM killed the next-gen Aurora and rebadged the 88 replacement as an Aurora).

My suggestion would be to get the VIN and call 800-442-OLDS and ask them if the car has the 3/36 or the 5/60 warranty. GM started offering the 5/60 warranty at the end of 2000, after announcing the death of Olds, but later allowed people to get an addtional $750-$1000 off the car if they went with the 3/36.

Re: the 2001 Auroras, there are some major engineering upgrades between the first version of the car, and the latter. The latter version is OnStar-capable, so, if you have OnStar, or your rear-view mirror has the OnStar buttons, you have one of the revised models...

This is true......right now. Just wait until the late models become 6,7,8 years-old. Then they will dominate this board the way the early's do now. American designed and built.

Indy, you seem a little... bitter. The Classic Aurora isn't exactly a testament to quality GM and UAW design/engineering/assembly. However, since the late '90's GM has made some major strides in quality.

I read Aurora boards before purchasing my '98 in early 2001. People were complaining about AC compressors, FPR's, oil leaks, et. al. - the same issues people keep posting about here (and why I knew I needed an extended warranty).

I don't see these kinds of posts on the new Aurora. Besides the ISS and a PCM update, not much in the way of chronic complaints (the 2001's have been out for nearly four years now)...

Yes, I am bitter, but it's my fault. I always told myself to never buy American, let alone used. But I gave in to the "this is too good of a price for this much car" emotion and later found that that original stance was justifiable. The big three have been sending the "give us another chance" message for years. Huge rebates, customer loyalty programs, etc. Recently I read an article about how the Mercedes and BMW owners have more complaints and problems than American owners. I heard that same thing in 1992. Never do you hear of them comparing themselves to ANY Japanese designer/builder. Maybe this is why, according to Kelly Blue Book, a 2001 V8 Aurora is worth $13,200 and a 2001 Lexus ES300 V6 is worth $19,000.

I've been a huge fan of the Oldsmobile for years. I’ve owned a ’72-CS, a ’81-88, a ’89-88 and now my ’95 Aurora (original owner on the GM PEP program). So I think you (she) made a great decision.

My ‘95 fits me like a great pair of Allen Edmonds. It now has 115K on it with some typical GM product problems. Most disappointing was a failed bearing on the AC-Compressor pulley. I've gone through 2-sets of tires, just put on new shocks (all around). At just over 80K I replaced the brake pads (I am an anticipatory defensive driver) and they had yet to wear down to reach the wear indicator. Another disappointment was a leaking master cylinder at about 90K (it’s the basic old m-c design they’ve used for years)…purchased a new one, simple replacement.

The V8 is a great engine...no vehicle should have anything less...I think you'll like the smooth rapid acceleration (if you can get it away from her). I have had no problems with my engine or transmission.

Anyway, welcome to the Oldsmobile family....I think you'll be pleased with your (her) decision. BTW: Nice color selection, Henry Ford had it right, "You can have any color you want as long as it's black." Mine is Dark Cherry Metalic (Please don't call in purple!).

I own a Polo Green 2001 Aurora 4.0. From the moment I first heard the General was going to take this car off the drawing boards and really produce it, I said i had to get one. I already owned a '89 Olds Cutlass Supreme and it's been reliable. Really reliable. I bought it back in '98 from a friend with less than 34,000 miles and right now she's pushing 265,000. But I finally found a 8-cylinder Aurora, actually two, but decided on this one. I've had it 9 months now, long enough for the 5 month warranty to lapse and have to replace the gasket that goes between the intake and the throttle body. Two weeks ago after driving home I noticed smoke coming from under the hood. It smelled like oil...I figured no problem, it's probably an oil leak at the drain plug. The oil plug was tight though. I took it back to the dealer and the news wasn't good. There's a leak at the head, $2700 job. I love Olds and wish GM would bring them back...but I'm hating this car right now. Yet, loving it at the same time. Because you don't see them everyday....so I you purchase a 4.0, be sure to check into both of these first.
