Looking for ideas on rough starting 99' SC

Hello,

My friend has a 99' SC with approx. 100K miles and has recently developed a hard starting problem. When the car is cold it will turn over, but will not start. If you pump the gas it will fire up but runs erratic until the rpm's get up to about 2500-3000 rpms and then seems to be smoother reving. During all of this there is a strong fuel odor and dark grey smoke comes out of the exhaust. After it is warmed up it can be shut off and restarted with out pumping the gas, but still has the low rpm erattic idle. He is looking at $70/hr for diagnostic and was told usually the problem is found in the first hour, but may take 2. Which to me, means to count on 2 hours + the repair. So, I was just wondering if anyone had encountered this and if anyone may have any suggestions. As a footnote we went ahead and replaced the O2 sensor, with no change.

Any help or suggestions, would be greatly appreciated,

Dave

GO BY A CAN OF GUMOUT SPAY REMOVE AIR IN TAKE
FROM THE AIR MANAFOILD SPRAY IT IN THE INTAKE WITH CAR RUNNING
YOUR IDLE SENSER IS GUMED UP KEEP CAR RUNNIG SPRAY IN THE GUMOUT SHOULD FIX IT KEEP RPM UP WHEN SPRAYING OR CAR WILL DIE.
